well, i'm trying to get my ipaq 3630 working after it was ruined with a failed rom update. i found something online about holding the center of the oystick type button down while pressing the reset button. people say they get messages about usb or other dock connections, and i'm getting a parrot on my screen! someone please explain!

it would be cool if you could take a pic of it
I've read about that referred to as the "Parrot of Death". It's believed to be a test pattern in one ROM update to check the ipaq's video system.
Doesn't help you with recovering, though...
Have you tried doing the rom update through serial instead of usb? The ipaq usb cradle is easy to add serial to.
well, the only pc that works properly here doesn't have serial, and the usb cradle is dead, so i was trying with ir. it seems that with the parrot on the screen (according to sites i found), i can control the ipaq through serial and a terminal on a pc. if i can find the rom image for it, i might be able to put it on the card and type in the command listed to copy it back to the ipaq. i'd rather than than buy a new handheld since hte trip i'm about to go on is long and i don't want to buy something new just for it.
well, i'm sure the repair insctructions are good. anyone know where to find an ipaq 3600 rom image online? i don't mean an update. i mean the actual image since i don't have another ipaq 3600 around to copy the good rom image from.
cant you just do a hard reset and fix everything? thats what i did with my palm.

nope, i tried the rom update from hp and compaq and that erased/fragmented the rom like it did for most other 3600 series ipaqs. nothing works. i get the parrot with the button trick, but anything else gives a flash of black lines and then pink screen.
