Well, today it happened. The Eagle, 97.1 FM in D/FW is no more. ClearChannel has decided to yank the plug on the rock format. 97.1 is now Sunny97, the best mix of puss... I mean the best mix of menopa... I mean the best mix of the 60's, 70's and 80's Light Rock...
The Eagle was *The Rock Station* since 1992, when they dropped the Active Rock format and decided that if it was rock, they would play it. They would have runs like Aerosmith into Metallica into Pearl Jam into Zepplin into Drowning Pool into Puddle of Mud into AC/DC. I did my fair share of bitching about the Eagle. I mean, some of the jocks really sucked, but they played rock, so it was always on the preset. Sometimes, it was hard to pin down the format, but they played rock, so it was always on the preset. The Eagle played "Mandatory Metallica" every night at 11:00pm (20-30 min of Metallica), so it was always on the preset.
For some reason, the Eagle's broadcast range was greater than that of any other station. When traveling, you knew that you were away when the static started to overtake "Stairway to Heaven". You know that you were almost home when you could pick out the riffs of "Master of Puppets". Like driving by the Miller plant in Ft. Worth, the Eagle meant that I was back to civilization, back to the familiar...
It meant that I was home...
I'm actually welling up as I type this, which I can't beleive. I probly has to do with the fact that the last song that "The Rock Station" played was Sammy Hagar's "Where Eagles Fly"...
Oh well, all good things must come to an end... and so the Eagle flies away.
CT used to have great radio stations. Now they all suck horribly. All I have left is WAAF 107.3 and WCCC 106.9, which both play the same 5 songs over and over. They're as bad as pop stations... The whole reason for listening to the radio is to hear new stuff, not the same 5 songs you're sick of already.
Maybe I'll get XM someday.
Bummer. I had a bit of an eye opening experience here in Memphis. For the last few years I've mostly listened to internet radio or a local independent, listener supported station (www.wevl.org). I just spent a week painting inside our new house and I thought I would check out the local rock stations, the usual "modern rock" variety. Well, wow, they really sucked. The bands went from mediocre to awful. I don't mean to be an old crank, because I find plenty of new, interesting stuff through internet radio; but what's on rock radio now sucks a lot worse than even 10 to 15 years ago, which sure ain't saying much.
That's ClearChannel
I like all kinds of music, so it's hard to pick one station. I also never know what I want to hear untill I want to hear it (get it?). That's why I'm getting an ipod. Summer job, here I come!
Dang..I live in D/FW and I listened to that channel. Im sad it died.
I know how you feel. 97.1 KTCZ (Cities 97) in Minneapolis is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and I've been listening to them for at least 5 years now. If they went away, I dunno what I would do for tunes in the car. (If Groove Salad streaming radio ever died out, I'd be screwed at home.)
I used to live in Ct, WCCC was one of my favorite stations as well as 99.1 WPLR, do you know if WPLR still plays all rock. I remember going there on a school trip when I was around 13 or so (1981) and had the whole tour and stuff. THey played The Who's Magic Bus for our busload of kids on the way home. Are they still classic rock?
And I think there was one other classic rock station, 105.9? What weere their call letters?
No, 105.9 is now "The River" or some such. It's basically adult contempo, I think. Adult pop mixed with the (very) occasional good song. It was (and still is) WHCN, though.
99.1 is still Classic Rock. They're allright, but I'm just a bit classic rocked out at the moment. And I have my iPod set up to play in my car, so that tends to be my radio station of choice
The Eagle 97.1 has risen!!
Ahhh, did you do a bit of grave digging last night wile you was asleep, did you happen to look at the date which was last posted ( 2004 ).
most people frown on grave digging post's this old
what you needed to do was to make your own post about this topic and added a link back to this post. and not grave dig and reincarnate this one.
you gives a (edited for potty mouth by eeun. Dreadful grammar left as-is) if someone goes and looks up an old blog... THE EAGLE IS BACK MAN!!!
(...and thread locked, since anything that needs to be said on this topic has been said MAN!!!)
