USB wifi for iBook G3 500

So I'm running Jaguar on my iBook, and I keep seeing ads for usb wifi adapters for virtually nothing, but they supposedly won't run on mac. Does anyone know of a hack that would allow me to buy one and use it in lieu of an Airport?

Mac Supported

There are a couple of them that are officially supported on Mac. I have this one. I bought it refurbished, and it works great. There is also this one. Range on that one probably isn't as good, but I'm sure it'll work OK. You can probably beat those prices elsewhere on the net, too. Other ones might work, but you might need some sort of third party drivers or something.

very cool ... while we're on

very cool ... while we're on the topic of WiFi and iBooks:

When I'm at Starbucks or Vigrin or BAA Aberdeen there are places I can get access to WiFI internet for free... (meant to be like that, not warchalking)

Anyway, I was wondering, how can you access these networks? Is there a utility for scanning frequencies or anything like that?

I know KisMac is for AirPort, but what about WiFi?

Best Regards,

Samuel

DO NOT BUY A D-LINK PRODUCT

DO NOT BUY A D-LINK PRODUCT

I just purchased the DLINK DWL-122 a few days ago, and I'm about to return it and buy the refurbished Belkin USB adapter. At first glance DLINK's hardware seems well built, however after just 5 minutes of use the adapter gets red hot, and for a USB powered device that's insanely bad engineering, plus I max out at speeds of almost 1/3 that of a direct ethernet cable, while my roomates with other cards get speeds equal to the cable.

I wish I saw this earlier, but there is an online petition to get DLink to update their third rate junk drivers. There's no getting around it, DLINK's software is crap and they won't fix it. My computer crashes a least once a day, the connection randomly drops, and it allows little user configuration, everytime you plug in the adapter it launches a little app and you can't stop this. They tell users that any errors they get are their own fault and are not traceable to DLINK. On top of all that it seems that the software won't work at all under 10.3, I'm running 10.2.8 and I wouldn't call it "working" if I was paid to.

Here's a link to that petition, you can read what problems others have had. http://www.petitiononline.com/dwl122/petition.html

I can't really express my feelings about this, DLINK is a company that bills itself as a mac supporter, but they seem content to release software that even Microsoft would keep in development and refuse to address known problems. At least Microsoft can be forced to fix their mistakes. It's just plain old flat out crap.

Josh

-Sorry about all this bitching, but I just can't believe DLINK would sell something so crappy. Since installing the software, and upgrading the drivers I've had to restart my computer at least a dozen times in the last 5 days. Before that, I kid you not, I had an uptime count of just over 48 days 16 hours. That's running OS X straight without a reboot for just under 7 weeks. Install the software and I'm rebooting twice a day.

That blows...

I had no idea the D-Link product was that bad. I guess I'm glad I went with the Belkin one, then. It has worked flawlessly for me, and that's on a Beige G4 with 10.3 on it. It's obviously a lot more bulky, though considering that it has a long USB cord and the little base station and all.
