Duo problem

I have a powerbook duo 280, that I bought a few months ago and was very glad to have. Now all the sudden I turn it on and it says "illegal instruction" before it can boot up. It says to turn extensions off, so I do, then it says "bus error".

It's probably a system problem, but I can't find a system 7.5 disk ANYWHERE! I CAN'T FIND A SINGLE 7.5 BOOT DISK!

well anyway, do you think that's the problem? Is there something I should try that doesn't involve the boot disk?

7.5 is easy to get

Apple has every version from 7.5.5 and earlier available for free download from their support page at http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html . Give it a whirl and you'll be good to go.

been there

beleive me, that was the first place I looked. I downloaded the 19 system 7.5 images, only to find that they make a CDROM image when put together, which is useless to me since the duo has only floppy. then I tried downloading the 7.5.5 update, because the first disk might be a boot disk, right? Well, no matter how many times I download it, and no matter how many different disks I try, the file is always corrupted and won't transfer becaue of a "disk error" when I try to copy it to my powermac (I transfer the files from a PC that is connected to the internet).

It's been quite a headache.

Do you have another computer

Do you have another computer to write the floppy with? Gamba's home page has a link to a 7.5.5 boot floppy. http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/

WOW!

Thank you very much Tyler! I think this is exactly what I needed! I don't think I could have ever found this great little website. I will try these boot disks tonight.
Thank you!

They work!

Yes, my powerbook duo booted right up from the disk. Thank you for the help.

I ran mac check to see what my hard disk problem is, but it wouldn't really tell me. One of my system files is messed up. I guess I'll just reinstall. *sigh*

Hold down the Shift key. That

Hold down the Shift key. That will load it all up, w/ out the extensions.
