anyone know where to get a later version of windows mobile for pocket pc? i'm trying to get video players up on my compaq ipaq, but every player crashes it. i think this is because the handheld still has the original system that came on it. any help with running systems and an avi player that won't crash would be much appreciated.

Microsoft doesn't make generic upgrades for PocketPCs. Check and see if Compaq (or actually HP at this point) has an upgrade flash available.
(I have a Dell Axim X5 that originally came with PocketPC 2002 that was upgraded through Dell to 2003, but that's where the line ended. From what I can tell major upgrades for PPCs are *quite* rare. Vendors tend to treat them as disposable consumer goods rather then computers.)
If you're trying to run homebrew/freeware/shareware stuff make sure you have the GAPI library installed on whatever version you have. (Goggle for it.) A lot of media-centric stuff requires it, and can crashes rather mysteriously on startup without it.

that missing file might explain why the pda freezes whenever i try to play an avi file. and well...avi is all i have for my long movies that i'd like to play on the ipaq.
well screw using the pda. i somehow just killed it because my windows mobile update off a disc i found failed. why would it do that? no idea...but i guess i'll never use a windows computer or pocketpc ever again...i'm buying a handspring or something...
With a Palm OS 5 PDA and TCPMP, you can play pretty much any video. If you get a Hires+ device like a Tapwave Zodiac or Tungsten T|3, you can play 480x320 videos. If you just have a Hires display, 320x240 is the best video size.
do any of those have built in headphone ports? that's why i originally chose my ipaq instead of taking a palm (m series i think) from a friend.
