Computer names

For the most part, my names are boring, but descriptive:

CW's iBook
Donna's iBook
PowerBook G3
Beige G3

But the name I'm proud of is the one I gave to a tray-loading iMac: It's a Blueberry with a Bondi logic board: FrankenBondi!

My Quicksilver with the big round speaker hole is Zorg. That hole just reminded me of the zOrg logo on top of the building in The Fifth Element, for some reason.

My sleek black Wallstreet powerbook is Bagheera.

i just have G4, G3, and powerbook. boring i know... if i had more then one of the same thing then maybe they would have names....

My signature has the names of my computers, sans my Hewlett Packard PC and Jornada; they are Prometheus and Jordana (get it?) respectively. I also name my telescopes and Palms...

Decency forbids that I list the names that I give my computers... or call my computers... or scream at my computers...

Most of my machines tend to be named "Fred". The current Powerbook is named "Pseudo".

My 6100's first drive upgrade, a noisy half-height 360 MB Connor, was named Vortex. In the end it was a very valid name, as my files went into it, ne'er to return. My first amazingly-huge 1 gig drive was 'gigaboy'. It was in a gigantic metal external housing painted with a marbled finish.

I usually keep one drive or partition on my primary Macs set aside as Archive.

On the PC side, the only naming I've done is for the basement file server, which I've creatively named 'Basement' under Win/Mac file sharing, and the server shares are divided into 'mp3 server' and 'File-O-Tron' (descriptive, plus has a hint of 50s b-movie sci-fi).

unimaginative names, like 'quicksilver'. However, the Mac I use most, my TiBook, is called 'scruffy', for obvious reasons. I pronounce it like the "Scruffy" janitor character on Futurama does, real gruff.

it's name is "nasicàa named after an anime by Haiyo Myazaki, one the greatest anime directors out there, he is known for "Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery service, Laputa, Castle in the sky, Howle's moving castle, and more" the name comes from his first film, "Nasicàa of the Valley of the Wind."

Or AKA warriors of the wind i use to have it on vhs tape "before it was ate" i love that anime. i want to buy the dvd sooo bad

My Favorite Source of Desktop Computer Names.

Examples:

Eryops - Quadra 650
Estemmenosuchus - Ultra 10
Coelophysis - SGI Indy
Gorgonops - B&W Tower
Koolasuchus - Sparcstation 5
Troodon - Pentium 4 Workstation

Etc. I find it builds character having to learn how to spell words like "estemmenosuchus" in order to access a system remotely on the network.

Laptops in my possession always end up being named after small herbivorous mammals, for obscure reasons.

I've almost finished A Street in Marrakech while waiting around at the hosital. I've been considering naming the Mini Baraka or Barakah after the Isalmic idea of the word that the author learns in her time in Marrakech. One of the closest Western ideas would be "grace" "divine grace" or maybe "holy spirit". The Hindu idea of Dharma would fit too, I suppose.

EDIT: and now the Mini lives as "baraka" and the iBook is still going with the old name of "ice ice baby" which I'm sure many of you can understand the origins of.

All of my machines are named after the Apple code names as I understand them, Bismol, Tessera, Columbus, etc.

The only two exceptions are Connie (a PM8600 w/ G3 upgrade) 'cuz that is the name of the speakable items figure, and Jenga (a PM7x00 clone) because it is a clone (duh). It runs AppleShareIP and the shared folder is named Bobba (could you see it coming?). (Incidentally, I used location manger to control my setting and called the loaction 'Fett', and the AppleTalk configuration name 'A galaxy far, far away'.)

At work, I tend to go with movie characters. At my last job there were three of us who were Trek geeks, so I named all of the machines after starships.

At my current job, they used boring descriptive names for them all (takes all the fun out of trying to guess who is on what machine!), but the newer ones I've named after cartoon characters.

My username on my iBook is Whosawhatsis with a shortname of 'who'. From this, I got 'how' for the computer name, 'what' for the hard drive, and 'where' for my iPod. Still looking for a 'when' and 'why'... much like in life.

My "server" is a stripped-down graphite clamshell iBook named 'graphite', and the 3.5" hard drive that I hacked onto it is named 'Lead' (pronounced 'led', like the metal, not 'leed'). I'm not entirely sure why I capitalized 'Lead', but all of the others are intentionally lowercase (well, the ipod is annoyingly all-uppercase, but that's the tradeoff I make for being able to use it as a hard drive with PCs).

I have 5 computers on my network, and they're named as follows:
- Czarskoe Selo (iBook G4) (Czarskoe Selo is the Czar's personal village outside of St. Petersburg - I thought it fitting seeing as how I'm rarely without my iBook.)
- Chernobyl (Quicksilver)
- Moscow (HP Kayak XU dual PIII)
- Perm (aka Dumpster Dell - Dell PIII something-or-other My Russian friend told me that Perm was the poorest city he's ever seen in the former USSR, so that's why I named the Dumpster Dell "Perm")
- Krasnya Armiya (HP Pavilion)

I also name all of my routers/wireless access points:
- Vladivostok (SMC - main access router to the Internet)
- Leningrad (SMC wireless - provides access to Czarskoe Selo & Chernobyl)
- Grozny (TRENDnet wireless - provides access to Moscow)
- Kiev (SMC wireless - provides access to Perm and Krasnya Armiya)
- Stalingrad (D-Link wireless) provides general wireless access in the west end 2nd floor of the house.

My iPod mini is named Czarskoevich (means "Son of the Czar").

The workgroup is SovietUnion. Betcha can't guess the connection between 'em all.

* I can't believe I missed Krasnya Armiya! It means "Red Army", and its my update server. I download all the pertinent Windows & Mac updates on to that machine and keep 'em there in case I need them again. Its much quicker than re-downloading the same updates from the internet over and over again. I thought that Red Army was an appropriate name, seeing as how that rig is responsible for keeping my Soviet Union running in tip-top shape!

The mac was friendlier and more human than any other computer. I worked at an agency where printers were named after colors. (My first days were spend hunting out the laserwriter 600 named "periwinkle".)

My current Hard drive is named Ozymandius. Drive names from the past have included Floyd, strong right arm, Thing one and Thing two, Ma Hunkel, Sal, Phantom Zone, Ark III, Einstein (for mac sw) Hawking (for PC sw) Romeo and Flux capacitor.

My PC's have always been named with a certain theme as well.
So far I've had ones named Bhaal, Mephisto, and now I'm using a home made PC called Mephistopheles. (Just for games)

Are we including iPods? My shuffle is named "Amphion".

I was working at a reseller and snagged the first shuffle through the door. We were playing with it and setting it up on my iBook when a customer came in. On the invoice, he listed his street, which was "Amphion Rd." or something similar. I was at the "Name your iPod" screen, so I figured it sounded music-ey enough and put it in.

As long as we're naming other Apple products, my Airport Express is "Phil".

hell

The name of the linux/bsd box. The clunky old PC that I install various varieties of linux and bsd on. Hey, FreeBSD has that little devil character so he feels right at home on a machine named hell. And hell, some of this linux/bsd software and the hardware it's running on can be a real hell to setup.

lose

The name of the wIntel box. Alot of the m$ apps and things in this buggy and compromised system are prepended with "WIN" but anything even approaching a win has not been my experience when using (or losing it with) WINdoze software.

exit

The name of my iBook. I chose this because on the Mac the command is "quit" not exit, so let's be different. And EXIT can also stand for EX-Information-Technologist. Exit is a form of patch or "trap" as in an exit routine defined on some wierd platform I once was introduced to. bye

I like to name all of my devices and such.

Bondi iMac- Caviglia, because it sounds like a name that a distinguished italian lady would have.. or something. (Can you hear it? The Contessa Caviglia of Naples? No? You're not fun.)
Mac Mini- Glenda, like the good witch, which has yet to come true and meet me in Oz.
Powerbook G3- Vertussi, this name has no reason.
ZACKS- This would by my Windows computer. For reasons unknown, it doesn't want to change its name at all.
Melange- This is my Treo 650. It's like a disease, I suppose.
Pinot- This is my Newton. I think I named it because I was thinking about wine, but who can tell? I know I can't.

The rest of my computers don't have names or have names that are so sigularly boring that their mere existance causes instability in the Chinese tea market.

I have to nickname Macs when I network them and usually just use the first name that comes to my mind for that purpose. The name will be logical and easy to remember yet will have something to do with that particular computer at the given time.

A computer just isn't yours until you've named it, that being said, here's the list and the reasons for the names:

"Converse" - Codename for the PowerBook 180, I felt it fit just fine. Before that, it was just "The PowerBook".

"Bondi" - Rev A iMac, again, that's what Apple deemed that color of the first iMacs to be called. It fit.

"Pyro" - Summer 2001 iMac DV SE, about as high-end as the G3 iMacs got save the 700Mhz version. Called Pyro because of how hot the passive cooling system got at the top vents. Regardless of that, it always served me well.

"Tank" - A scrapped, now tossed P100 Gateway desktop. My first introduction to the Internet and PCs. It was simply a massive, metal-encased hulk. It died, I salvaged, then dumped.

"Akaida" - I forgot who named it that, and I forget for what reasons come to think of it, but it was my secondary server for awhile. P166, very reliable, if finicky machine.

"Shadow" - My current server, an AMD K6-2 box from Acer, upgraded in just about every way. Called that because when I first got it, the only place I could put it was under my desk "in the shadows". It seemed to fit.

"Rustalon" - Previously "Athlon" due to my lack of imagination. It's my current self-built AthlonXP 2400+ box. Rustalon because after a failed attempt at a brushed-steel look, the case rusted in the roadtrip from NE -> WV. The case has since been tossed for a much better one, but the name stays.

"Bash" - Performa 6200CD. The name is mostly self explainitory, the machine makes me want to bash it into submission at times, yet it's my legacy gateway to the PowerBook.

Ok, old machines.

I've had a series of iBooks (with a longer series of logic boards) for several years, each of which had the same name as above. Before that was a Bondi iMac that was originally known as 'iMac' but was renamed 'bondi' some time after they started releasing other colors. The original 4-gig hard drive was also 'iMac', but it was replaced with a 30-gig drive with 3 partitions named Cortana, Leela and Shinatama (A.I. guides from the Bungie games Halo, Marathon, and Oni, respectively). When that drive died, it was replaced with a 40-gig with 4 partitions named Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde (the ghosts from Pacman). There was also a Powerbook 170 that I started calling 'Brick' at some point. That was preceded by a performa and a ][cx that are now champion dust collectors, but I don't recall them ever having names worth mentioning.

Scrapper - My old 300mhz Clamshell iBook. After seven years it continues to run without problems.
Pismo - My PowerBook Firewire. Real original huh?
Turbo - My Mac mini. I named it that after I maxed out the RAM and slapped a faster HD in.
Nuke - My homemade PC. I bought a huge ugly yellow case on the cheap. It reminds me of the yellow radiation sign.
Major Payne - My old Compaq Presario that was a major pain in the ass. Crash happy to the point of insanity.
