The machine will make the boot noise with the processor installed, but no video. I was running it at 300 and 266. I did try one 450 setting once, but it yielded the same results. I have no idea what brand it is, only that it is 450.

G3 ZIF 450 upgrade on a gossamer board - Not booting
Maybe the Front side bus of the 450 doesnt do 66mhz. your machine is a beige right?
If it won't run at its specced 450 it may well be a DOA CPU. I assume you know how to set the CPU multiplier/bus-speed, etc. Is the bus set (for starters anyway) to 66MHz? Did you try it at a lower multiplier, eg: to get 300MHz?
Did you reset the CUDA chip? Are the CPU and RAM fully seated?
dan k
here is a nice little site that shows all the clock settings
jummper setting's list
all you need to do is make shure the jummpers are set correctly i would only use the 66mhz bus or possably the 70 but not any higher because it will slow the memory timing down to cl3 from cl2 and you wont see any improvments cause of the memory has slowed down. you also need pc100 cl2 to even take the bus above 66.
It boot spuratically, I got it to boot once out of chance, and ran it for a while. My diagnostic programs showed nothing unusual. (TattleTech) I turned it off, and left it for about a half an hour, and when I returned, it booted cold! I tried shutting it down and booting again, but it didn't work. I am wondering if this might be a PS issue or a grounding problem.
Edit:
Actually to get it to boot, I have been pushing the CUDA while the machine is running, when I do that the computer will restart, instead of simply shutting off. If I put in my ADB keyboard, it will not restart. I assume the continuous restart behavior has to do with a disconnected ground somewhere.
is the little jumper to select what PSU you are useing set right its infront the pci slot the cuda button is beside. normaly it set to Mac powersupply (it is on my Beige G3 AIO) but dunno if the other 2 version of Beige G3 uses a diffrent setting or not. but what it sounds like is the pram battery is dead here is a link to buy a replacement battery for $6.88 USD including shipping(if the pram battery is dead it wont boot only some times
pram replacement
or your beige G3 has a royal VRM in it wich isnt compatable with the G4 cpu's and can fry the G4 cpu wich is explained here
http://www.macworld.com/2000/03/bc/30upgradejeopardy/
and here to see where the vrm is
vrm location
I have a Raytheon VRM, and I don't think that the PRAM is dead because the stock 233 boots properly.
huh wierd, is the cpu new??
did you hold the cuda for 30 second's with the machine off and unplugged when you replaced the cpu
mabe there a stick of ram not liking the newer cpu have you tryed removing all but one and try each one by its self
Looking at the Jumper Spec page referenced a few posts above this one, in order to achieve exactly 450Mhz on a Gossamer board, you need a 75Mhz Bus Speed/30Mhz PCI Speed/6x Clock Multiplier. If the machine is booting, but the video is wonky, your video circuitry (either the onboard or on a PCI card) may not be able to handle the different PCI frequency. I'd recommend changing to an 83Mhz Bus Speed/33Mhz PCI Speed/5x Clock Multiplier (=415Mhz) or an 83/33/5.5 (=~456Mhz) and see if that helps.
What spec is your RAM running at? PC 66 isn't going to like being driven faster than 66Mhz. If your bus is higher than that, you'll need PC100, or maybe even PC133.
Hope this helps.

450mhz from B&W G3
Raytheon VRM
384 mb PC-100
6 meg Rage Pro
Rev C rom (I think, Firmware 2.4)
i went home to dink around with it, and when i tried the usual for about an hour, it wouldn't start at all.
Try this link .http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3-ZONE/ Lots of great info on upgrading ALL G3's. Hope You can find help there. There is a couple links relating how to G4 ZIF a G3 on this page. Also double check that the ram is seated all the way. I've have spuradic booting on a few puters over the years on machines I was sure the ram had seated all the way, until I pulled them and reseated them.
Would the fact that my ram doesn't show it's speed cause any problems? It is PC 100.
no it shouldent . but to be on the safe side i would try diffrent ram if you have any to try with it. and also check your jumper setting's to make shure you are not overclocking the cpu go to the site i listed in a erlier post and see what setting to use with the cpu you have. some G4 cpu's in a Beige G3 dont liked to be overclocked or underclocked
Is it possible that this processor does not support this board, and I got it to boot a few times out of pure luck?
it should work fine i dont know what is wrong. im buying a G3 450mhz cpu im going to see if it also does the same thing. BTW what do you have the jumpers set to on the mobo
011100101 I think that is from the rear of the board forward.
thats it you have the jumpers set wrong it needs to be from the little 1 infront of the jummper block if you look around the jumper block wich is going to be from left to right lets say the one is right here 1 101011100 for 433 with 66mhz bus or this one 110111100 for a 466mhz with a 66mhz bus. the way you are showing is a diffrent posision than what i am showing so just reorient useing the 1 on the mobo next to the jumper block sorry if i confused you
it will be like this if you look at it from the pci side :::::::::1 so really you can flip the order around of how i said to match yours
I was recalling those off of memory. it was 1001001110. Right now i am trying 001011100 400mhz
ok i just bought a G3 450mhz cpu and hope i can help you to get yours running
i just got the cpu and i have it set to the 433mhz cpu/66mhz bus setting and it runs fine for me
I must come to the conclusion that my new zif is the victim of ESD
. I think I will try to use it every so often. I hear that ESD parts are often finicky. I guess I will go buy another processor.
Thanx for all the help.
ESD ???????? What is that
I don't usually use a grounding strap. I just keep my hand on a grounded case and hope for the best. The part was probably zapped somewhere along the line. ESD parts often can be functional every odd wednesday of every fifth month.
let me guess ESD means electro static discharge
