g'day, As you all know, I have been happy about sporting my Beige AIO (g3) that I have done some major OC'ing to (a 233MHz CPU to 280, and a 300 to 458) and I come to you to ask this. I have been getting "Can't_Open" printed on my screen, but after about 30 seconds, it goes away, and then boots. I am boggled as to what causes this.
A little Info of what I am doing:
I am getting ready to install PPC Ubuntu 5.0.4 on this machine on the original HDD (i am keeping the OS X I have on a seperate 11GB Hdd (now on the desk)) and I switched the HDD's out, and all works well. I can boot from CD, and HDD after I installed OS 8.1 No problems. But it takes a while for the screen to come on (probably because I have 256MB Ram in it [takes a long time to add up those numbers, eh?]) and then displays the "Can't_Open" for about 2 1/2 Lines, then goes on and is happy booting.
I am wondering how I can get rid of this?
Any one got any clues?
I also cannot reset the PRAM, but I CAN boot into OF. I don't know any of the commands for OF 1.0 (compared to "New World" macs, I don't know ANYTHING about the old OF that apple integrated into the early G3's)
if I have to, i can just let it go, but it still takes a while to boot, and under OS X it did not do this.

I know you can explain this better... because I usually never have trouble understanding what you explain... and I have no idea what's going on in the paragraph following that quote.
lets see what I get:
-you are going to install Ubantu on the original HD
-you are going to keep the OS X on another HD
-you switched out the HDs (this is where I get really confused)
-you can boot from CD (with... OS X? Ubantu?)
-you can boot from HD (which HD are you talking about here?)
-you installed OS 8.1 without issue (???? when... what... which HD?)
-screen lags during boot
-the mystery: "Can't_Open" appears (when booting what? Everything?)
-boot completes (I'm too far gone now to continue... I'm just totally lost)
sorry coius, I really want to help... but I don't get what you are saying (is it me? am I losing it?)
ok, I got the hair-brained idea that I would put Ubuntu on a spare HDD which was the original HDD for the AIO Series (4GB Apple Desktop HDD IDE) I had the hard drive in my PC for a while, and have decided to try putting ubuntu on the drive.
I physically removed the internal 11GB HDD (which held OS X tiger) and set that aside. I booted off of an OS 8 CD, but was unable to partition the drive, so i went to OS 9 (mactest pro boot cd I got from apple.) and partitioned.
Now, about the "Can't boot" issue. it appears after the machine does the POST, and when the screen shows up, it puts up "can't boot" about 30x across the screen, sequincially. Then procedes to do the "Happy mac" icon, and then continues booting as normal.
I am just trying to cut the boot time by Removing the "Can't boot" screen segment, and go straight from monitor powerup to loading the OS.
It did this right after I switched the HDD out (Tiger) and put the spare in it (The unformatted 4GB Apple one). Before I loaded up anything (an of the classic CD's) it did this. It did not bother me, but everytime I boot it, it does this.
On to the OF
I cannot perfom a PRAM Reset, as it does not read the keyboard after *Boing* It just sits with a blank screen, while doing the ram check. then proceeds to the "can't_boot" thingy it does.
I am pretty sure if I know how to reset the machine in OF (is it reset-init?) then it should boot properly.
EDIT: As of writing this, my machine will no longer boot from the CD-Rom, but is now sitting at the [?] screen. with the floppy disc. I am going to explore this further by throwing the OS X disc back in. Wish me luck!
booted right in without any problems. No "We are hanging here" and it didn't do the "black screen for 20 seconds" or "Can't_boot" message. It seems that OS X Broke my Firmware.
Oh well, I will save it for another day...
that is, unless anyone has any more suggestions?
OS X won't break any Beige firmware, as it's all hard ROM. It's probably corrupted your OF settings, so getting in and doing some stuff like set-defaults might help. Also check that the boot-device is set to something like APPL.ROM, whcih should be the default. OS X chenged it or boot-file to hd://,hd.txi or something simlar. It's looking for that file, but can't find it so it times out and drops to plain MacOS.
I don't remember exactly ... but pretty sure it was my B&W when it was acting funny... and it was with OS X...
Could it possibly be a PRAM battery problem? Could it be a PCI bus problem? just ideas... I think I only saw it once or twice... then it must've stopped. In curing B&W issues, I invariably pull all PCI cards (but graphics) and push that cuda button over and over... or hold it down for 30 seconds...
hey,ive had that on my AIO before, IIRC in OF, INIT-NVRAM took care of it.... IIRC
I remember my dad's beige doing this after booting the 10.1 install cd, just go into the startup disk control panel and select your boot volume, after that it should be alright.
