Who here is feeling a little "under the weather"?

It's that time of year, and i'm just curious who all has a horrid cold. I was also wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to get over this thing quicker so I can get back to life! Feel free to make any suggestions.

Early Stages

I'm presently in the early stages of a cold. I'm always getting sick anymore. I've come to peace with that fact, considering that my office is in a high school and my days are spent cracking open iBook G4's that lord knows what has been done with by the students. On the upside, I'll have immunity second only to that which is given to diplomats after another year on the job.

Difference between a cold and a flu

A flu tends to last longer and is more severe

I was... but I'm feeling much better now...

Around Thanksgiving, the wife and I had a mild flu that camped out in my upper chest and throat and actually took my voice away. Now, as some of you may be able to discern from my prose, I'm one to expatiate. When I can't talk, I get so frustrated that I simply stop communicating at all.

About a week before Christmas, my wife and I caught a cold. It was a nasty one, too... the congestion is still in my sinuses...

Other than that, I feel fine now.

Oh, and when it comes to home/folk/magical remedies, mine always seems to work:

Alchohol kills germs. Ingest much. My preferred method of delivery is by the pint... Trust me, if your going to be slinging snot, it's better to be snot-slingin' drunk! You will either get over it faster, or you will forget that you were ever sick in the first place.

iYawn

iYawn! Feeling pretty lethargic over here. get that way in early jan-early march.

best thing to reccomend is a good nights sleep (like thats gonna happen), plenty of fluids/ possibly hot stuff like tea coffee and soups, and keep warm.

in my neck of the woods it gets a bit cold in the basement in front of my mac...

try wearing a scarf around the house. call me a nutjob but it really helps you feel better

Smile

I just recovered from one

but I gave it to my mother accidently Blum 3
She has been up all night coughing for the last few weeks (3-4 of them actually) and I can here her coughing now. It sounds pretty violent, as I am waaayyy across the hall, and both of use have our doors shut, a I have my Computers on (count 6 of them, 5 desktops, and 1 iBook; it get's pretty hot in my room, even with the windows open in the middle of the window when it is 15 deg. F out)

I had been down for at least 5 weeks now, and still have a lingering tickle in my throat that makes me cough some. Oh well, At least it is not the time I got walking pneumonia. That was pretty bad, I coughed till I vomited. And after that, the henuchsholineperpera (i don't know how it is spelled Blum 3 ) and that was pretty bad, all the blood vessels in you body constrict. that left me hurting in my lower regions as well.

all in all, then I was out of school for 2 months. It took me a while to recover after that (at least 4 months after the 2, so all-in-all, 6 months.

So, i didn't mind going thru this.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, eh?

Yes, very much under the weather--the trade winds are back, a little overcast from a front that has dropped delicately down from the northern pacific, so they're saying it should get up to only about 79 or 80F tomorrow. It's been clear skies in the middle 80's with light winds for weeks, so waves on the south shore have been small, so I've been suffering, yes suffering, but now with the tradewinds back, I think I'll get my fins and do some bodysurfing in the 6 foot tradewind swell predicted for tomorrow at Sandy Beach over on the east side. Probably will see some whales jumping out there too. It's that time of year. And as I'm heading for the water and stepping carefully between the fresh-off-the-plane bikini-clad damsels laying out on the sand all cocoa-buttered and sniffling into their towels--smile but stay away please--I'll be thinking about all you poor guys here and your travails with the latest microbial pestilence. Get well y'all, and take care. Much much better to be out in the weather, although under it here is just as good too.*(cue the ukuleles)*

Blargh! I guess it takes lon

Blargh! I guess it takes longer to drive the i435 highway loop around KC than it does to drive around The Big Island. At least it did when my parents honeymooned there... If something bad hits around here, you can expect me to show up in HI a little midwest "love" to spread. Some may not think helping spreading immuno-defensive-building microbes is very nice, but then I'd at least get to go somewhere that's always within 30mins of the ocean. Biggrin

Tips for avoiding illness

Here's a little list I've compiled of ways to avoid disease.

- Avoid children at all costs - if they are under 18, they serve the same purpose as fleas and rats in the days of the plague (no insult intended)
- Avoid the elderly - Yes, they've contributed a lot to our world, but they can also contribute illness at this stage.
- Water can carry bad things that you'll never see. To ensure that it's filtered properly, run water through at least three Brita filters to ensure that the water is clean and safe to drink.
- Avoid eating out - Lord knows what is going on in that kitchen, and people often feel compelled to bring their children to restaurants - making this a double whammy.
- A surgical mask and latex gloves should be worn at all times - As long as there's a barrier between you and the world, there's a barrier between you and illness! (Even better to live in a sealed environment)
- Avoid pets of any kind - cats and dogs are chock full of illness causing bacteria
- Avoid fast food - Not only is it bad for you, the employees at fast food restaurants are often apathetic and don't care about the food being handled in a clean manner (Of course, everything will be right when the health inspector comes)
- If you must eat out, go with the health inspector - they'll be able to ensure that your food is up to par and unlikely to cause disease.
- The best way to avoid illness is to live on a tropical isle with no other occupants (think Gilligan's Island or Lost, but without the humor, action, or other people). Make sure to have plenty of food handy. If this isn't viable, it may be a good option to hermetically seal your place of residence.

If you must be in a setting where many of these great suggestions are not viable, airborne is incredibly helpful (an odd taste though). Orange Juice is a vital part of your diet, and I don't mean the concentrate stuff - get the real orange juice (while living in Florida, I became something of an orange juice snob) Pulp makes it even better.

mono is lots of fun

The highpoint was going around feeling like utter crap for weeks wondering why. I went to see the doctor, they did the test, and sure enough it was mono. I have no idea how I got it (my fiancee didn't, and has never had it). Since I'm the onsite technician at the one to one initiative school district, I was quarantined from work for a week. I really hated that week - I had nothing to do buy lay around. My fiancee was wishing to have been able to do that, but I can't stand having nothing to do. The only thing that anyone thought could have brought it to me was one of the student machines I worked on. (You'd be horrified with the things you find in the keyboard of an iBook belonging to a high school student)

Re: mono is lots of fun

I have no idea how I got it...

The same happened to me back in '88. (Oh crap... now I sound like an uncle)

Anyway...

I went to the Soviet Union for a foreign exchange trip, and somehow caught mono on the way back. The doctor called it "culture-shock", and I had a helluva time convincing my girlfriend that it was just that...

I think the best part was the 104 degree fever that I had for two days... I mean, not many people get to live through that and talk about it, so I consider it a plus...

I woke up this morning with a severe cold. I completely blame this thread's bad karma for my illness. Wose yet, after I finished replacing the ABS wheel speed sensor on my car this afternoon (outside in 20 degree weather, no less), I felt like I was gonna die.

I woke up today and blew a bi

I woke up today and blew a big load of mucus from my nose. Suddenly the pressure in my sinus was gone and I can breath clearly. I've had a small sinus/ear infect for a couple days. I am now happy that it is over. It's been interfering with eating!
