It was the same thing when I was /.ed. Moron after moron sending me stupid emails and making stupid posts. Eventually they crashed my server but over the next couple days I got about 500 emails.
The hardware can handle it just fine. We've been Slashdotted before, and survived. And besides, Digital Forest has excellent bandwidth.
I must be lucky today, because this was my first Slashdot story submission ever -- I figured I'd have the same chances of getting a green light that I do on Fark.
Thanks for that... I can rest easy, then. Hate to see my favorite sites melted.
We're averaging 60% idle.
I took out the code that calculates longitude and longitude cooridinates for every single vistor, though…

( I have a good idea, but... ) Would someone mind describing the process of what actually causes the slashdotting? I mean... how does too many requests cause a webserver to go down completely? And what sites cannot be slashdotted (what are their properties)?

Is this the slowest slashdotting ever, or what? From 913 users around midnight to 1813 an hour later? That's like... what... 15 requests per second? Like watching grass grow.
Just discussed this with Tom, the logging system cuts out under heavy load so it won't be reporting accuratley for a while.
Keep in mind that SciFi had a "Firefly" marathon earlier today... and had both 'Saffron' episodes...
Well... then I'm curious... is the server keeping track at all? Can these stats be posted afterwords? Or because the logging cuts out... there's no record? I don't understand why I want to know what the peaks were....
The statistics module is automatically throttled when the server load jumps, so it's doubtful those figures are accurate.
IIRC, popular pages are also cached in RAM, which might effect how visitors is counted. I haven't really looked at the code much.
httpd is keeping track. Drupal, I'm not sure.
There, obviously, is a big difference between running a little site as opposed to a large popular site. The page thats linked in the /. article is a big page here, lot of data. I guess no matter what, the raw power of the mob is to be respected... in some sense. For instance... the story earlier on /. about the HS punk that was arrested and charged with a felony for telling friends to keep hitting refresh on their HS web site... then a /. poster links that site, and, in the immortal words of The Steve, BOOM: that server never had it so good when it was just that punk's friends hitting the site. When /. rears its ugly head, I guess you take notice, have measures in place.
Will we get to see the stats of what's happened here tonight? (yeah... I guess I am pretty boring)

In my case it was because some admin at my ISP set the web server to allow unlimited conenctions. It only had 1 T1 line and got 3.5 million hits the first day. Once they set the machine to 100 connections, then it just denied most of the requests and those that got through saw things fine, not to mention that it allowed the rest of their servers to start working again.
