You see, I have a G3 upgraded Powerbase lying around and a copy of Yellow Dog Linux 3.0.1 as well. So, I've got to thinking about setting up a dedicated firewall for my personal network. Not for my whole LAN mind you.
I don't want a complete how-to on it (I wouldn't mind), but I want to know if anyone has any opinions on this. Do you think my Powerbase will be able to handle it fine enough?
but keep in mind, there is going to be a limit of how many things you can put on the network, before you are going to see noticable slowdowns. IIRC, I have seen someone use a Quadra 840 for a FireWall and router. I think they got 14 computers going thru it, before they saw a slowdown on it. Basically, it comes down to how much data it can move thru the bus on the system. between the network card, and CPU. but I wouldn't use YDL. It is a port of RedHat for PPC, and that is god-aweful slow. Plus, not everything in that version works on the powerbase/6400. You might want to try ubuntu. As it was a Native PPC Build to begin with.
Install Debian, but only install the absolute minimum. Don't bother with X11 as it'll just slow it down. It is also very easy to set up and configure because of APT.
mostly, you want to get the least CPU time consuming OS on it. So, if you have just command line, it works even better
