the only difference is the personality card handles video for the internal CRT on the AIO
so other then that i can get a diff personality card for it and it should work then?
definatly
i think it would be neat to free up all that space inside the case and just experiment. probly run alot cooler too. what do ya think, 14" LCD fit right in there? i know crt's are never what they say they are, so 15" probly take off an inch or so? what about the speakers, are those also run off the personality card for the AIO? maybe ill have to make somthing work on it.
the speakers are run off of the card. But then again, you can get some harmon kardon's in there with a pre amp and make the connection to the audio out. or buy a splitter and some rig to do the headphones and whatnot. If you are doing a hack on it, might as well as do it to the peripherals as well.
I suggest getting a dvd drive in there and installing tiger (which can be done easily, in my experience.) do the updates one at a time, or the display turns off. but that might be just the crt connection. I have noticed that mine turns it off when doing more than one update at a time.
You can make it easy by force quiting the software update right after it says "restart or shutdown" dialog. then just reopen it. I have done updates all thru this on all of my machines. Usually, i can do updates and only have to restart twice. And that's also on the AIO i have.
ive had horrible luck with putting OSX on this machine. i gave up trying. i have it just for os9 anyways as i have panther on my g4. this one is for old games like marathon that still need some OOMPH to run nicely. there def isnt anything new out there for os9 so i think im good to go with this machine running at 350 mhz. i will just gut a set of computer speakers and use the amp inside for the internal speakers that are in here. they seem to have ok sound for what they are. my games are almost too loud sometimes. if this whole thing works out well i might make it into a new case and make it sorta portable for bringing it to work with me. who knows. its just for fun, and thats what old macs are for right?
I am a person that likes having macs "stock" condition. It makes me more comfortable that one day, it might become really popular in about 15yrs as a "must have". I think all those people who modified the 128k with the memory upgrades, are kicking themselves if they still have the machines, as they go down in price from it. I got $200 from mine (not bad, seeing as I got the mac for free from my friend as he did not know what it was ) as it was stock condition.
IIRC all of the personality cards have the AIO connector. A Gossamer board is a Gossamer board.
thats what i wanted to hear. my plan is to make some type of case with a 15" lcd and use this board in it. it will be about 8" - 9" deep, and what ever the widths and hieghts need to be. kinda like a suitcase, so i can bring it to work. possibly put an ati radeon 7000 if i use the lcd. and not hook up the crt. that should work right?
Not *all* personality cards have the AIO header. I've got a G3DT with a basic audio-only P-Card and it's missing the stuff for the AIO. However, I've also got two G3MTs with the Wings A/V and they've got the AIO headers.
there is even a version of the A/V personality card that dont have the AIO slot on it there is a site that shows all the diffrent versions of the personality card but for the life of me i cant remember the site. and the same site shows him hacking the AIO's personality card to allow it to take a tv tunnar card
what about this.... does anyone know the pinouts for the internal video connector? if so is it a pure vga signal? i could possibly hack it to another screen that has a vga input and sneak the power cable outside and piggy back it off the main cord. or i could open up the power supply and sneak it off the main input there. im just really looking for a way to make a more portable g3. i wanna build it almost into the shape of a suitcase, i know its gonna be like 8 - 9 inches deep right?
you might be able to make an analog convertor for it. I know aladds has told me the someone figured out how to hack an ATI card to work with the internal Video. You might want to PM him, and he may provide the hack URL. He seems to know more about this model that I do.
Why not just use the motherboard video port at the back of the mobo? It uses the same chipset as drives the PERCH card, doesn't it?
i was just thinking of keeping the wires inside the case, if i have to ill run somthing to the outside. but im thinking of ways to make it more portable and less clutered. like one power cord and one ADB cord possibly ethernet.
From memory the Radeon hack had an external video connector running from the Radeon back in through a slot cover to access the PERCH card. When I get Safari working again, I'll dig up the URL from my bookmarks.
If you are good at fine soldering and can find the part, you could replace the horizontal video connector on the motherboard with a vertical one.
the site is here with the radeon AIO mod
