Sony headphones

I have a pair of Sony "MDR-1" headphones, and, as most (if not all) sony headphones have the MDR prefix, it makes me wonder if these are the first sony headphones... does anyone know if these are, indeed, the first?

I don't think so

I could be wrong, but I believe the MDR-1s were the first of the modern generation of Sony 'phones - perhaps even the first of what in the late '70s and early '80s was the new-fangled idea of on-ear headphones as opposed to larger, over-the-ear 'phones.

My memory is that the MDR-1s were the first Walkman headphones - either included with the first Walkman in 1978/79, or else the first Walkman-style model that Sony sold as a separate item (as opposed to included with the Walkman).

For some reason, I'm thinking

For some reason, I'm thinking that the "DR" in the MDR prefix is short for "digital reference." Sony, back when CD players were still new, began labeling some of their headphones as designed for "digital sound" (like it matters what the headphones are plugged into). Therefore, those headphones are newer than what Sony's oldest headphones would be (my guess is their first model debuted in the 1960s and was a pair of big over-the-ear cans).

Got a picture of them? That may help.

They look like this...

They look like the pair in this photo, except black:

Also, they say "Dynamic Stereo Headphones" on the side, beneath that sliding metal thing about 2" away from the speaker.

Those are definitely not the

Those are definitely not the first headphones Sony has ever made. They may be the first (or one of the first) models they have made for the Walkman.

Thanks for all your input.
Now I just need to find the walkman to go with them ( I found these in the attic)!
