Help with "Monitor Adjustment Cable"

Hello, i'm wondering if anyone can haelp me out here... i have several macs, new and old. The one im asking abour is an old road apple Performa5215CD all in one type guy... I know, its mostly worthless, BUT it has the tv tuner card in it and that works just fine, as my intention for this computer is as a secondary crappy television in my bedroom. However, the screen geometry needs adjusting. The service manual states to run the apple display utility (which i DO have) with a "Monitor Adjustment Cable" connected between the modem port and a pin on the analog board. I was wondering if anyone knew the pinout of this cable so i could build one, or if anyone actually happened to have one that they would part with. Any takers? and please, dont flame me about it being to old and worthless and so forth... i dont intend to use it as a computer, just as a TV that looks like a computer.

Thanks in advance,\
Bill

Best wishes!

Good luck! Interesting topic- Google only turns up a previous discussion on, of all places, Applefritter. It's obviously a rare item.

progress so far...

well, so far i have made no progress, i removed the shunt on the analog board where you are supposed to attach the special cable, made a connecter out of a single wire from a piece of cat 5 cable (attached it to a pin from an old PC CD audio cable, and installed that where the special apple cable should go... i have run it to the back serial ports as the service manual and programs on screen instructions reccomend, and have tried connecting it to various pins (tested all) thought that it would just hook up to the data transmit line... guess i was wrong there must be some more stuff going on in that cable..... ill keep trying.

Interesting indeed!

I didn't even know such an adjustment process existed, but then I've never owned one of the AIO performas.

What aspect of the screen geometry needs adjusting? Are there any other adjustment controls on the analog board, or on the monitor yoke?

Keep us posted...this is the sort of tinkering a lot of us come here for.

well...

so, im gonna give it a rest and go out for a while... seem to be stumped. None of you have tried this before? Well... does anyone know if im even headed in the right direction with this?

EDIT: on the board you can adjust "focus", "screen", horizontal raste, vertical raster, and colors... but apparently because it is a multiscan monitor and the adjustments are different for each resolution mode (this is my understanding anyway) the geometry adjustments (size, the amount of the screen it fills, and if the screen looks lik (_) or )_( instead of [_] ) needs to be adjusted through software with the use of this cable.

The solution!

I think I have the solution, but it is for sure dangerous!

1) Think about the ANODE with High Voltage! Also the Yoke and Wires and the Flyback Transformer!!! Many thousands Volt!!!!

2) In Germany I found a way to take a self-build cable like the origin Apple one from the analog board as descibed to modem pin 3+5 (3+5 shortcutted).

3) Please, only work like in powermac.perf_5200.5300.pdf described!

4) And not only work as a NOOB! It is really dangerous, schock hazards may possible because of the High Voltage!!!!!!!

Soon as I have the whole German Text and have tested at my Performa 5400@5500 (Mainboard 5500 in a 5400 housing!) and my 5320 I will translate it in english - ok?

Greetings from Freiburg, Germany

WOW!!

Thank you so much for the suggestion, I had abandoned this thread, thinking all hope was lost. I am not at all afraid of the voltages and have worked around that stuff for many years... I will try what i think you are suggesting,... and let you know how it works. thanks for the input!!!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

OK!!! Manfred, when you come to New London, CT USA I owe you as much beer as you would like!!!!!!!!

IT WORKED!!!!!!

THANK YOU!!

If anyone had any trouble understanding this solution, he told me how to make the cable ive been looking for. As per the pdf you are supposed to connect the cable to the contact point on the analog board and plug it into the modem port, then you can run the screen utility program to adjust the geometry of each resolution. i had just been guessing at pins with no luck, and the answer is to make a jumper so that the contact point on the analog board also shorts pins 3 and 5 of the modem port (the outermost pins in the middle row).

SUCCESS!!!!!!

i made mine more of a permenant cable. i used plastic coated 24 gauge wire from a cat 5 cable, modified a hard drive jumper so the wire was attached to it, put that on the pin header on the analog board and then routed that back through the case, soldered my jumper wire onto that lead and reassembled the machine. When in use i just put the cable into the appropriate pins (3+5), when not in use i take the lead and screw it to the chassis by putting it under the washer for the TV tuner card thereby shorting the pin on the analog board to the chassis (which is what the orig. jumper did... confirmed by my meter.)

Manfred, you put the pieces together for me and brought me a solution!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

if anyone has one of these machines and cant find the Service PDF that tells you how to use it, or the display utility program... contact me and i will send it to you.

If anyone had ...

Since many years I will travel to USA! Why not?
Because I am drinking no beer, you can give me any other thing? ;-))

I have had these MONITOR ADJUSTMENT PROBLEMS (the sreen has black stripes on all 4 Monitor sides!) on some PERFORMAS...

I have searched alone for the SCREEN UTILITY for weeks at the internet (if anyone needs it, I will send it!)!

Then I have found the German DOITMAC side with some infos, how to
get these to work, which PINS needed and how to make a cable, and to use the Apple pdf-file...

Then I found a dealer in internet, USA, which told me he has somme of that origin cables, afterwards they are not in stock, because this peace is for to old apple machines!

So I am very glad, that you are alive! Really, because 25000 Volts are not the place to handle with for everyone or for NOOBS! It is very dangerous!!

FINE, that we can give this info to all the searching peoples!

I also have further infos for things, some guys must know:

- The VIDEO of Grand Funk Railroad at Texas Pop Festival 1969
- The VIDEO of Grand Funk Railroad at Shea Stadium, New York 1971
- A site, where you can download nearly every LP or songs as MP3 files for $1/10 cent
- The possibility to download VISTA 5231 and so on...

All things we are searching for can be found!!!!!! (Nearly all...)

Open Monitor Case means: Mains cable plugged off

Please, guys, Mains cable plugged off at every work inside any monitor!

Then wait 15-30 minutes.

Then DONT touch any HIGHVOLTAGE PIECE/PIECES!!!(25000 Volts!!!)

If you are a BEGINNER go to any person who knows much about "working inside a monitor"!!!!

Here are good sources for you, to answer some of your "long time unanswered questions":
