Classic II dead at startup? Pic included, please help

Long story short, my Classic II seems to have bitten the dust. THere's a LOT of history with this machine, and it's kind of important to me. I've had this problem once before, but it cleared itself up out of nowhere after a few months (this was back in 98 or 99). THere's no startup sound, no signs of life by any means.. I just get this black and white checkerboard pattern on the screen...staring back at me as if to mock me.

I have that "Dead Mac Scrolls" book by Larry Pina, and while the Classic II is too new compared to the models the book covers, there's a similar problem listed in the book that occurs with the SE/30... but in both instances the book lists, it has to do with either the roms for the FDHD floppy, or the ROM SIMM itself... and I dont recall the classic ii having removeable rom chips or anything like that.. o0nly other possibility is if the ROM chips themselves just crapped out?

I'm really at a loss :/ I don't know quite what else to say to explain the problem, but if anyone can offer any insight, it would be much appreciated.

RAM Reseat

Try reseating your ram, after cleaning the pads on the ram cards. IIRC, that helped me once before with the same problem

yeah, I tried that and it was

yeah, I tried that and it was to no avail :/ matter of fact, I disconnected just about everything and then hooked it all back up again, just to make sure there wasn't a loose connection anywhere. Also, found that the ROM was indeed on removeable IC's, so I reseated those as well.

I don't want to have to, but I'm thinking maybe a new motherboard might make a difference.

Classic II board

I have a Classic II board laying around that you're more than welcome to. I can't guarantee that it works, as I have no way of testing it. I do know that it was fully functional when I pulled it from the Classic II it had previously called home.

The board is complete and has all four of the ROM chips in sockets.

Let me know...

dead

i had the same problem on a Classic (not II), and it was a problem on the motherboard. I removed the rom chip, just to see what happened, and the screen was exactly the same, so i thought it was probably a dead ROM. (on the Classic I it's an IC in a socket, not a simm, i've never seen a Classic II inside).
Another motherboard made it work, i didn't try replacing the rom.

My Classic II does not have a ROM SIMM. My Classic II has the ROM chips sitting in sockets on the logic board. I've yet to see a Classic II that used a ROM SIMM.

Nor I. And yet I was reminded this week, as I reworked two Classic IIs to 10MB of RAM, 'new' Quantum 500MB drives and OS 7.5.5, there is provision at the back right of the logic board for a vertical processor-direct card (even if it isn't called a 'PDS'). The stencil on the logic board indicates the socket's intended use as for a ROM card or 68882 FPU. I put an Applied Engineering FPU card into the 'younger' (Aug. 92 as opposed to Jan. 92) machine, which is still in superb condition despite some shrinkage of the display. Apple (except for a passing reference in the Users Manual), and others such as EveryMac and Mactracker, make little mention of the PDS connector.

Next step for the young 'un is an Asanté EN/SC external adapter so that the Mac can join the LAN.
