My Mac Plus started smelling a little after I had booted it off a Rodime System "20 Plus" 20MB External SCSI Hard Drive. I turned off the Plus and the Hard Drive, and didn't touch them since.
I booted up my Plus the other day and I saw this on the screen:
A movie of the Plus starting up WITHOUT the hard drive is available here. (1.1 MB, 13 secs). It does the same with or without the hard drive connected.
What do I do? Is it fixable? Right now it is imperitave that I get it working ASAP.

The horizontal sweep on the tube is gone. Get a new tube and you should be fine.
This is not the tube, but the powersupply. The Highvoltage is dead.

Uhm...
In CRT display systems isn't it the *yoke* that provides horizontal and vertical deflection of the electron beam?
(There are/were tubes that have built in electro-static deflection plates, but I'm reasonably sure that just about every computer monitor made in the last few decades uses magnetic deflection.)
It's more likely something in the horizontal sweep circuit on the analog board. Look here:

(It suggests several components that it's likely to be. I'd start by reflowing the solder around all the components in question, as there may just be a bad connection. However, the fact that you sensed a "burning" smell before it died suggests a component failure. Probably the resistor the page mentions.)
If you're not up to soldering then about all you can do is replace the analog board with a good one.

true, but what value is the capacitor and how hard is it to get?
My Plus is already packed ready to go so I will do it when I get to Aberdeen ... what tools do I want, what sizes and where do I get them?

The value should be printed on the old capacitor.
It sounds like you may want to find someone with some experience to help you out.
There are *many* basic "how to solder" guides out there on the net. Entering "Soldering Tutorial" into google will get you a few pages worth, many of them including hints on assembling a basic tool kit, etc.

A standard solding pencil or soldering iron should be fine. Dont use a soldering gun. Get an iron with a pointed tip and dont heat the caps for too long...they blow up. (Someone was deafened by an expoding capacitor..)
He'll burn though the board and start a fire before he blows a capacitor up with a soldering iron/gun. The only way I've been able to blow up a capicator with heat was with a heat gun, on high, pointed at it for a minute or so. And being deafened by its a little far fetched. Its now quite but it isn't much worse than cheap fireworks.
