What does this empty thread start mean? Do I detect the smell of impending evil! Is it just magic PB smoke?
I'm looking forward to the next installment of "The Thrilling Adventures of jt, PB Hacker Extraordinaire."
:ebc:
I've had a thread running about this over at the barracks, if you want to attempt to understand my prose, give it a shot:
RetroBook Hackathon!
A picture is worth a thousand words . . . one of my PDFs . . . :?
PB100cPPC.PDF 124k
This isn't just a plan or a virtual hack, BTW. The 5300/190 FDD, along with the HDD cage, CD-ROM Drive, PCMCIA Card Cage (only the ejector sans PCB so far, the pins of which will extend thru the floorplate adapter PCB) and the KBD from a 1400 have been fitted into the empty shell of BabyPB along with her original trackball.
The only readily apparent change to her external appearance is the 640 x 400 x 16bit Active Matrx LCD's perfectly PowerBook100 size-matched display behind the unmodified bezel opening of BabyPB's lid. It's snapped shut onto the LCD of a 2300c and of course, the sleek new KBD clearance trimmed look of her rear platform and the function key equipped dark KBD that accents BabyPB's age-darkened greenish/yellowish-gray external plastics.
Piccies to be taken sometime today or tomorrow for a PhotoCD.
If you have problems with the PDF in your browser, save to disk and open it with Acrobat, it's straight out of AI8

. . . bit I don't know why it didn't display the "bump" message? :?
The latest installment is over at the barracks, HEH!
'fritter posts just get the facts . . . I'm beginning to think they're somehow getting the idea that I just think about . . . and never really DO anything about my hack plans over here . . .
jt :ebc:
Looking good JT! Now all we need are some pics of your creation!
Tried saving it and opening, didn't wanna work. And I was trying to open it with Acrobat Pro 6.

. . . oh yeah! It also shows that LOVELY Long@$$ 2300c LCD cable!
Just uncouple the right side (AKA stage left as seen from the backside of the LCD, in the piccie the one with a ground strap straight hanging down is the LCD side and the other one with the grounding strap on the side is for the inverter board) of the "T" by clipping and then extending two short wires connecting the inverter board to the backlight and that cable stretches way out to about 12" long! There's also a nice, convenient amount of play for repositioning the inverter board there on its own built in extension cable!
jt :ebc:
p.s. YAY! Somebody fixed the sig kluge! This is MUCH more convenient now, nice work!
p.p.s. WOOHOO! You also fixed that huge, disgusting waterbug of an "opens links in same window by default" BOO-BOO! EXCELLENT work! Maybe more people will start posting again . . . losing posts by checking links in the preview window was even driving me away!
. . . her 230 in bondage and her sidekick, SonyPB for comparison.

I love it. It's taking on something of a Millennium Falcon quality.
Besides, I've made a few special modifications myself. She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts.
It took a while to read through your stream of consciousness posts at the barracks, but I think I've finally got a good idea where the project's headed.
Hacking Powerbooks ain't like dustin' crops, boy... :coolmac:
. . . on what I'm doing with it or attempting to tweak or to attenuate SOP related borkage SNAFUs crop up . . .
. . . so it goes . . . . . . OOH! :o "Player Piano!" . . . that might make a good name for the "studio/rack/dock/drawer/chassis section of the hack . . .
Millen . . . erm . . . MF may be a good term for this . . . :? . . . heapBooks? :ebc:
. . . and I love the image that popped up the second I read your post of a canopy/turret sorta detailing of the clear plexi glazing planned to gradually replace all that remains of Dock#1, but MF seems a little too . . . can't think of the word . . . offhand . . . even though BabyPB's aged, almost gunmetal patina plastics . . .
I've been imagining much less of a Solo/Lucas kinda deal than a Panza/Cervantes sorta gig, but NOW! . . . you've sorta got me goin' off on a Kurt & Son express train tra . . . ngent . . .
jt :ebc:
You've probably covered this somewhere else, but exactly how does the Declaration ROM switch for the DuoDock work? IIRC the ROMless Dock from the DuoBoomBox thread worked fine except you lost SCSI. Is that correct?
. . . old forum threads I listed/summarized in a response in:
jasoco's hack thread.
I think the only info not covered was the report on my FINALLY being successful using the PAS16 NuBus card to achieve stereo output.
I'm encouraged that somebody besides the ever-reliable eeun and G4 has been diligently slogging thru the MacMaunderings® over at the barracks. Were you able to decipher a clear image of the general direction of this hack? It's sort of a stroll down MacMemoryLane combined with a more capable/compact/useful takeoff on the Duo/Dock/Portable Hack proposal. It's really nice to have all three of my original PB's heading into this together with my very first love taking charge. Assembling "Beater" the new1400c workhorse, has made it possible to reactivate all his subnotebook forebears at once for the final QuixHacticQuest!.
I'm thrilled that I went in this direction, rather than takeng the road more traveled (very likely because it's much more practical=8-/) by snapping up a refurbed or remaindered iBook, it'll cost a lot more in the long run, but an iBook wouldn't be even close to as much fun as this project.
jt
p.s. HEH! :ebc: . . . besides, those iBook sirens will plummet to the Duo's and 1400's current price levels some day too . . . and thanks to the maniac's pixel pushing input . . . an X capable 5xx takeoff on the BabyPB hack is already back-burnering for that eventuality! =8-0
. . . available, but I can't edit it into my post above to replace the long list of discrete links.
