I'm hoping someone can offer me some free advice for my old beige G3/266...
#1 The USB card is a pci1045, c861 -do you know who the manufacturer is? I think I need new drivers for this card because.......
I was recently gifted a new HP psc1350 printer, but can't print to it because of the USB card, per a HP "mac support" tech. I know the printer works as it will make copies and scan. Apple Profiler does see it & it does select it in the chooser. When I try to print window or go into page set-up. I just get a -192 error or a "the error is ."
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I've had this printer since last August and have yet to print to it!

USB's echo of SCSI voodoo was whether peripherals were connected to a computer that was natively USB. Some devices would only work with native USB meaning that machines upgraded via a card wouldn't work with the peripheral. Is that what the mac tech support person meant?
The impression I got from this last tech guy was that since this machine & card was so old, I would need to contact the card manufacturer to see if they could provide new drivers that would work with this HP printer. I don't think they really knew what to tell me since my Sandisk mini cruzer works fine from the same USB.
Do you think I should purchase a new USB card? or just get out my sledgehammer.....

that you use the screwdriver, as you could find a way to make it work. And besides, keep the sledge hammer in good condition for windoze boxes.

. . . option have and have used it on several occasions but you might want to make sure that you have the correct drivers for the card and that they're actually working. So, I'd reinstall the drivers if you haven't already after checking that they're the right ones.
You can always wham the be-jesus out of it later.
That's just it-I don't know anything about this card other than the # pci1045, c861 -do you know how to find out who the manufacturer is or what drivers I might need? I'm still running Mac OS 9.2.2

. . . check your extensions manager and see what you have at the moment and that they're turned on and all that. From what I remember -- and someone please correct me if I'm worng -- in classic the choice is between USB 1.2 and 2.0. But more important: google the name of the printer and read the reviews and specs. See if it requires native USB. If it does, there ain't nothing you can do.
A new generic OHCI PCI USB card costs all of $10 (or less) and will work fine with Mac OS's native drivers. Why bother with the hassle of trying to get a problematic card to work?
IIRC the -192 error tells us you are trying to run PPC software on a 68K machine. Err, and that's not obviously the case . . .
What OS are you using BTW? And is the printer connected through a USB hub? Or directly to the Mac?

Ok. thanks for all the input. You guys are great. I'll look into the native USB/ printer question asap but I would have hoped the HP "Mac" tech would have known that answer....
To answer all your questions- here goes:
The OS I'm running is 9.2.2. HP Printer is directly connected.
All the extensions that are on are from the packages Mac 9.2 1, 9.2.2 or lastly a USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1 ("Mass Storage Drivers for Universal Serial Bus")and specifically turned on at the HP tech's request...

your USB card is probably fine. I just noticed you mentioned "my Sandisk mini cruzer works fine from the same USB."
I'll suggest you try attaching the printer through an externally-powered USB hub, rather than directly to the Mac. Some devices need more power through the USB port than a USB card can supply. Yeah, that makes little sense, but using a powered hub can solve many similar issues. In any case, it's nice to have a hub, makes adding more USB devices much easier than having to reach around the back of the Mac.
I've bought a number of items from newegg.com, where generic USB cards cost all of $8 to $12 or so, and cheapo powered hubs are under $15. Locally most any computer shop will carry USB 1 PCI adapters, look for OHCI which is the name of the interface standard. Avoid USB 2.0 cards though, MacOSes 8/9 are picky about USB2 chipsets.
Also, try reinstalling the printer's drivers, and delete any and all HP-related prefs from the Preferences folder.

Mass Storage is probably not needed for the printer.
with os X's Unix core- finding printer drivers (not to mention USB card operability) is relativly simple.
for printer drivers- i recommend: http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/
download the hpijs and the other file, install, then rock on my friend...
Any OHCI compliant USB card should work. Some of the older cards aren't though. I'd just suggest buying a new card as they are really cheap.
