Quadra 650 web box

I am setting this up for a friend as a temporary internet/web machine.
All he uses is a browser... doesn't need bells and wistles...

Which browser should I use? Is there a firefox for Sys 8.1? Is Netscape the only choice? Are there security/virus issues to be aware of?

MacTracker says that Sys 8.1 is the highest system it will run...
I'd like to get 8.5 at least... 9.1 at most running on it.
Can I get a definitive confirmation of the highest OS this box will run (without a proc upgrade)?

Also, MacTracker says it has 1mb of video ram... but there are no SIMMS in the vram slots... what does this mean?

THANK YOU

That quad

Hey,

There is a 601 PPC upgrade for that quad. Without it, you ain't going past 8.1. 8.6 ain't going on a Quad or any other 68k Mac. As for your choices in browsers go here:

http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/browsers.html

ICab is preferred by a lot of vintage folk but I never recommend browsers because people tend to be really picky about them and there is never any consensus so see what floats your boat. As for the vRam, LEM says 512k expandable to 1MB but it doesn't say by whom and whether it can be diddled by the user. I had a 650 years ago but I had a nubus vid card in it so the particulars of the on-board video never came up so I can't really answer that.

Thanks... what about

I don't have 8.1 install disks, so I am forced to use the 8.1 system already installed.

Unfortunately, it looks like it is using this extension called "On Guard" which is preventing any changes... I think this must have belonged to a school district at one point...

I tried holding the shift key to disable extensions... but no dice...

Any one know how to disable this extension (so that I can delete it)?

Thanks.

Disable Onguard

Hey,

Unfortunately, the best way to disable pesky security software is by copying a system from the install CD over the boot system file. Two suggestions. The first is trying to remove the OnGuard extension from the extensions folder and putting it on the desktop and restarting. If you can't do that, then get a copy of ResEdit, open the OnGuard extension, erase sections of the code and replace it with gibberish. That way it won't work. And now for the mandatory warning. Since you do not have a backup system to install, be very, very, very careful with what you rewrite with ResEdit.

nice suggestions

I can't move it... or rename it...

But what I can do (I bet) is throw the HD in another computer... mount the disk, and delete that crap.

Thanks for the help!

BTW

Hey,

Any boot system that will boot the Quad and will let you remove the extension. So if you have a boot disk for 7.1 or 7.5 you can boot the Quad with that. Or with super booter from gamba.
