Hey guys remember me??? I wus the guy who was puting a 5500 in a drawre and hooking it up to my home theater. Now I decided to use a larger cabinet because of heat concerns and I have switched the case, I found that a 5500 motherbord is newer than a performa 660 cd but they fit eachothers cases. I just switched them and fixed the problem of that huge all in one. Now it is up and running except for two problems. One I have an old bulky apple multiscan crt for the monitor and two the sound sux. I am on a low budget so a fancy lcd is out of the question but does anyone have any other sugjestions I have decided to not use the TV so I can listen to music while playing videogames but anything else thats cheap might work and I have a USB card in the comp if that helps with anything sound related. Any info will help just remember im on a low budget. :macos:

What about one of those 4" ish NTSC LCDs that you can pick up for around $60. Combine that with a $10 scan converter and you'll have something thats good enough for showing images or an MP3 player GUI
If I remember correctly, USB sound is more or less considered to be sucky. I know nothing about it myself, but, this is what I hear. What exactley about the sound sucks? Is it the speakers, 'cuz you can buy a halfway decent pair of computer speakers at Best Buy and hook it into the speaker port. Were there any good sound cards made for the Mac?
Doc.
List requirements . . . for the overall system and what you need to do simultaneously, it you're the only one gaming, the TV would work fine for display.
List your available features . . . do you have picture in picture? We don't really know what your I/O options are, which sound output do you want to hear from which speakers?
Do an I/O diagram . . . you can wire it up any way you want to, but we don't know your hookup options to suggest changes.
Basically, you need to tell us what you have to work with, how you think want to use it, what you're already planning to buy and why, and what you would like to be able to do in the end if it's possible, but you don't see how to do it with what's on hand . . . yadda, yadda . . . if you really want to get some useful input!

USB sound depends upon the speakers the amp and the source material. The USB speakers on my Cube are excellent. They lack bass but that is to be expected from a speaker this size. The only issue with USB sound is generally it eats more CPU cycles.
Ok heres wut I got. A 5500 in a performa 630cd case. It has a huge old mac CRT and is then hooked up to my KLH 500 watt surround sound sys. I use analog sound (the colored plugs) and the TV is just a basic TV without any bells or whistles. The computer has a USB card but I am thinking of buying an optical sound card so I have truly digital sound. The problem I have rigt now is that in most of the songs the vocals are drowned. I attribute this to analog sound because EQ settings have not been benificial. I am usin Itune as the MP3 player too if that makes a difference. So now can you help me???
Hunt down and post a link to the info on your KLH system. Explain what's hooked up how, from what output to what input and with what kind of wires/adapters and such. Sounds like something's not hooked up right, needs a pre-amp or better wiring or maye the settings for the input could be wrong.
Have you tested the computer sound out with headphones on both the front and back jacks? Have you double checked all the control panel settings on the Mac?
Do you want to listen to music from the computer on 5.1 while you play games on a console? You haven't explained EXACTLY what is you are trying to do so we don't really know how to help.

The 5500 is a great little board. I have one in a Performa 638CD and use it as a tv/printer station.
Are you running the sound out an RCA jack to the stero ? My 5500 has a A/V output card.
Or, have you tried using a decent pair of external computer speakers instead of the built-in monitor speakers?
I use an older Altec system with a sub-woofer and it sounds pretty good for a puter ! I have seen the Altec sets for about 20 bucks on Ebay. I found mine at the thrift store for $2.99.
I personally prefer CRT's to LCD's and the new CRT's are pretty cheap, and seem to be a little smaller in size than they used to be. The 15" LCD's are cheap now compared to a few years ago if you shop around.
Krow,

You know sound doesn't sound good out of a standard mini to RCA. The ends of those converters usually arn't gold plated. So, if you can, get a card with RCA plugs, and get gold plated plugs to go between the mac and reciever..
My 2 cents
