Hello All,
I am having a problem with my recently acquired 1400. I can't seem to mount any CDs whatsoever in OS 9.0.4. It doesn't matter if they're burned or if they're original from the manufacturer. These CDs work in other Macs, but not this one. I do know the drive itself works, because I can boot off of my Norton Utilities disk with no problems. It's leading me to believe that it's a software problem (extension maybe?) but I can't figure out what's wrong. Googling determined that I need the Apple CD/DVD extension loaded at boottime, but that's already there, so I don't think that's the problem.
If there are any souls more knowledgable on this topic than I, I would be very greatful for any and all suggestions you may have to remedy this problem.
Thanks!
The Czar
Do you have the latest Apple CD/DVD extention loaded?
It is a well known problem with the 1400 Cd drives that they stop reading cds. You need to adjust the laser.
Ive lost the darn link to the site that explains how it is done...but I will have a look.
Ah Ha!

Boot the 'Book from the HD's OS (holding the shift key to disable the HD OS's extensions) with a bootable CD in the CD drive. If there's an extension problem the CD will still mount since it'll use the drivers from the CD disk. If the CD shows up, then you indeed have a missing or currupt driver in your HD's OS folder.
Since you can boot from a CD it's obvious the drive itself is fine. However, you don't mention which CD drive you have (6x, 8x or 12x.) If you have the 12x original you might want to to toss the old drive rather than mess about with it, and replace it with the faster Teac CD-224e 24x mechanism, a straight dropin, faceplate even fits perfectly. See my my page for details.

It is the original 12x unit. Sorry, I neglected to mention that in my first post. I will look into the 24x Teac unit, but I'd like to get the original unit going, as finances for computer upgrades are somewhat limited these days.
Cheers,
