Actually there is a program or two like that for Mac OS X. Disk Studio from Micromat is one such utility.

from SubRosaSoft... VolumeWorks

Since your goal is to try out Linux on your Mac, and you seem willing to spend a little bit of time but not lay out some money, you should really try out Ubuntu.
The installation is remarkably straightforward. I'm near certain that the installer includes a opensource utility called "parted" which will allow you to selectively shrink your current HFS+ partition (without destroying any data) and create the partitions for a Ubuntu install.
If you'd like to try out the OS first alsso they have a Live-CD which will run Ubuntu w/o touching your HD. You can get the ISO's to burn both the installation or trial CD from here:

Or, if you'd like they'll even mail you an installation CD for free!

You could conceivably use the partitions created from this process for your YDL installation, but I'm not sure if there is any advantage of YDL compared to Ubuntu. Ubuntu seems pretty together, and I found YDL support difficult to find.

volume works and ipartition both have free trials
as for 'parted' it looks to be the only GPL sw that does this and at the moment is only running on a couple of linux distros, so unless ure into some serious programming to get it moving
