Hey im just wondering if anyone knows about puting a regular hard drive into a ps2 instead of the official 40gb 1 for $100.00 HA! Is there any formating or special disks needed? I googled for almost two houres with no real results so anyting is helpfull

Just wondering, I know the drive comes with FINAL FANTASY XI for $100. Probably $50 for the game and $50 for the HD. If that is the case $50 is not completely insane, in fact quite reasonable. Can you buy just a drive? what other games can support a HD? And i bet the drive does have that special PS format.

The Drive can only be bought in the pack with ffXI and im not reely interested in that game. Also the HD can be used with to backup memory cards and save newer games that are still coming out. I think its kind of like the online headset. First it was only available with socom and now you can buy it seperately and usse it with more and more games
it uses a strange port for the hard disk ... so you would probably need to figure out the pinouts of that and compare them to normal IDE ... then you would need to build a converter ...
EDIT: it would be simpler if you could find someone here who owns one of the hard disks ... you could work out the pinouts from that pretty easy ...

Well, it may not be so now, but there used to be a HDD kit available without any games. That was quite a while ago, though.
You may want to see about tracking down a PS2 linux kit. As it comes with the hard drive. I checked about 2 years ago and it ran about $150 but I am sure that the price has came down since then.

from looking at the PS2 linux things it seems that to use the hard disk you need the PS2 network card aswell ... so without one of those it would be very difficult to get it to work

Unless they have changed recently you do not need the NIC. A guy in the local Linux User Group had the PS2 Linux setup before the NIC was even released.

The PS2 Linux kit *always* included a NIC. As to the relationship between the drive and the NIC, well... the connectors for the drive are *on* the NIC, so that sort of implies you need it.
Note as well that the Sony utilities for formatting a hard drive only recognize the one they distribute, so good luck making a third-party one work.
(It may be possible with a mod chip. I recall vaguely hearing something about that.)
Also note that Sony is very explicit about saying the hard disk distributed with the Linux kit is *not* usable *at all* with PS2 games, at least as long as it's formatted with a Linux partition.

k i tried to just plug in a regular hd and the pins are the same. As far as the formating thugh sounds like more work than its worth so ill just wait for them to sell individual hd's or some other person to do it.
This brings up the interesting possibility of being able to use a second harddisk with PS2 Linux. Or, if the interface is IDE, one could attach a CF or PCMCIA to IDE adapter and transfer data to and from the PS2.

hmm ... from looking about there also seems to be an external version of the hard disk which connects through a PCMCIA slot (i didnt know the PS2 had one of these :-/) ...

That's exactly what Sony wants everyone to think. The HD alone is a standard 40GB ATA HD. The formatting and PS2 hardware is what prevents it from functioning with a regular PC.
Supposedly on this link I found, someone figured out how to do it with a regular out of the box 40GB HD. However, the PS2 needs to be mod-chipped, and some of the software necessary is not available (broken links)
