Shooting Their Own Feet...

That little news blip was literally a footnote on Yahoo news yesterday; now it's basically buried. This doesn't change the fact that I'm an Apple supporter. However, it does reaffirm my belief in the way the world operates (listen to the Who's song "Won't Get Fooled Again"); the fringe is always wanting to get to the center, and just like the ones they challenged, once they acheive that position they do pretty much the same things the old guard did to assure it. Hence, the Pirates have now become the Navy.
This is not helping their public perception, but it's to be expected. Still love Apple, might buy the book (sorry, Steve...).

There use of capitalization w

There use of capitalization was a very bad choice. When I first saw it I was trying you figure out why they were calling Steve a Con. After a few seconds I realized they meant Icon.

If the book tells anything close to the truth, then I suspect the title is a bit of a pun, and means both.

Unless there's anything sland

Unless there's anything slanderous in the book, Apple hasn't got a legal (or any other) leg to stand on. I personally doubt there is anything slanderous in the book, because Apple got a manuscript 2 weeks ago. If Apple Legal had something more substantial, they would not be reluctant to use it to their advantage. This reeks of repressive measures to me.

It appears Apple is using a bazooka to kill a fly. How many people do you think would actually purchase this book if no one made a fuss about it? Outside of the hardened Mac fans (many of whom see Steve Jobs as a God), few people would be interested in it. By drawing attention to the situation, Apple's intentions are likely to backfire, that is, draw more people to bookstores to purchase the book.

Plus, I don't think Apple realizes that by pulling these books from their shelves they are alienating a potential market. Think about it: you go in to get a computer book. You go into the Apple Store and, while there, see the latest Macs. You play with one and decide you want to purchase it. It may be a little while before you return with adequate finances to purchase said machine, but a sale is a sale. Once people realize that an item is not available at Apple Stores, they will proceed to go to other retailers to get it, many of whom do not carry Apple's computer products.

By using this bazooka, Apple may well kill the fly, but whatelse is going to be destroyed in the crossfire?

Just my $0.025CDN Wink

Cheers,

The Czar
