It doesn't run on a machine that didn't ship with FireWire, so I'm assuming that creates further problems with hacking it to run on very very old hardware.

XPF is XPostFacto, it allows you to run OSX 10.3 on Beige G3s...
If I can't get 10.4 to run on my G3 Desktop (G4 Sonnet 500 MHz) is there a 10.4 compatible Mac which has PCI slots and will take PC 133 RAM (ie the ones in my G3 DT...)?
Beginning from the B&W G3, all later models have Firewire. So, if you would like to keep PCI cards and your SD-RAM, take a B&W G3 or G4 models up to the Quicksilver. All later G4's have DDR-RAM.
I found a G4 bi-processor 2x450 MHz is that a good machine? I am not familiar with bi-pros...
Yeah that's a fairly good machine, has AGP graphics, PC-100/133 RAM, gigabit ethernet etc. Full specs can be found here:

I've used XPF to install OS 10.2 on my 8500 and was wondering whether it would be possible to put 10.3 on it??
Not something I'm likely to do but it would be interesting to see if it could be done for future refernece.
Also, is 10.3 natively supported on the Beige G3 like 10.2 is??

Not sure 10.2 will go on a 8500, and 10.3 is not compatible with Beige G3s unless you use XPF Find info HERE
I have my G4 now but the RAM I had in the G3 (256 Mb simms PC 133) don't work
What could be the reason?
And The G4 came with an AGP graphic card 16Mb ATI. Is AGP 16Mb better than a PCI ATI Radeon 9200 128Mb?
No, not even a bit. That 9200 is a pitiful GPU, but it's still a lot better than the (these days) anemic RAGE 128.
I might have to invest in an AGP graphics card... Any ideas why my RAM is not compatible? It is PC 133 256Mb simms and work in the Desktop G3...

"The Apple 4.1.7 and 4.1.8 firmware updates incorporate a number of fixes that dramatically improve system stability and performance. The update also includes a new check that validates whether the installed memory in the machine is compatible. This check was added to help alleviate random crashes and stability issues. The new memory test disables memory DIMMs that are found to be out of specification and DIMMs that can not be determined to be compatible. As a result, some third party memory that was recognized by previous versions of firmware may no longer be recognized after the updates."
The full technical explanation of *how* the machine detects "incompatible" RAM is complicated. Basically there's a little EEPROM chip on the DIMM which contains a list of supported modes and timings which the computer reads on startup. Apparently because of reliability issues Apple was having (no suprise there) they tightened up the memory requirements, removed support for CL2 RAM timings, and had the memory controller disable any DIMMs which don't respond with a valid CL3 timing information. Cheap PC133 RAM often only supports CL2@133Mhz, and since it's being *sold* as 133Mhz RAM they don't bother putting CL3 timings into the EEPROM.
The right thing to do is to buy compatible RAM. If you're morally opposed, you can try this:

Thanx for the advice, I couldn't make the RAM from my G3 work so I took the RAM out of my PC (yes I have one) and it works
now I have a healthy 896 Mb 
the reason it seems is the the G4 only accepts the PC133 with a single sided row of chips, not the two sides with 128 Mb per side... I am not sure of this as I haven't enough gear to prove what I think... but at least I have enough RAM now. The G3 RAM goes OK in the PC so all is well!
