GAH! Just when I get my powerbook 5300 to work with the internet, it gets the chimes of death.
This is what happened:
I tried playing a game of tetris from a floppy.
The computer froze.
I hit restart.
All is going normal, I see the happy mac.
The hard drive is clicking more quietly than normal and making a spinning sound, if you don't know what I mean, ask me to elaborate.
Chimes of death sound.
I tried making another startup disk (to see if it's just a harddrive problem) with my powerbook 180, but all the sudden, floppy disks won't work in the drive. So then I tried networking it with my SE to transfer the system files to make a boot disk and the appletalk network doesn't work.
So what could be wrong with my powerbook? Does anyone have any experience with these? Could I open it up and fix it myself?
its not that hard to take them apart, if you wanna pop in a new HD or someting, at least you get the happy mac first, so no matter what, you logic board is fine. I would pop out the HD, try to boot if offa a slim os 8 on a memory stick or somethinn in the pc card slot, that always worked well for me

thanks for the quick reply, I feel better knowing that the motherboard is not fried. Just for your information, I DID just get done giving the thing a nice paintjob.
I took the HD out, I haven't replaced it yet, but I'm trying to see if I get the flashing question mark. Would that be an indication that it it's certainly the HD? I tried turning it on, but it doesn't do anything. Does the HD have to be connected in order for it to turn on? I didn't rip any wires or anything.
