I will soon enough(like in 3 weeks) have the opportunity to buy a new iBook G4. Or. I'm considering a number of other computers, the main two being a 900MHz G3 iBook or a new eMac. Because the eMac is just a big lump it would need some reasons other than price and 17" screen(even if it is a CRT) for me to get it over the iBook. So really it's G3 or G4? Because the G3 is so much cheaper I could max out the RAM and maybe upgrade the hard drive... would it be worth it? Or is the G4 just that much better?

What are you going to do with it? If you are planning on playing around with video or audio mixing or other heavy hitting stuff, go with the G4. If it'll just be a browsing and e-mail machine, the G3 will do fine. G4's are definitely good when it comes to heavy hitting processor intensive tasks like video.

I'm saying that when the computer I use most of the time is my 466Mhz iBook, and I use it for all kinds of crazy stuff. However, when I use my Beige G4 400Mhz, it is significantly faster when I do processor intensive stuff.

I HIGHLY suggest a G4. You will notice huge performance gains in all areas... my mom's G3 600MHz iBook is painfully slow to me, even for web broswing; now, I'm very impatient when it comes to my computers (that's why I have a Mac, to save me time and stress, right?), but even OSX is notably better with a G4.
What's your budget? The iBook G3 should be the first off your list if possible. If you can live without portability, desktop units get much better performance / price ratios, but if the 'general use' stuff is more important than gaming, you may want to stick with portability.
I have a DP 867 G4, which is plenty fast for everything I throw at it; I graduate in just over a year, and I hope to buy a Powerbook (G5? *crosses fingers*) and build a $500-ish gaming PC, as well as keeping this machine. I'm such a geek... the things I'm looking forward to in college are an excuse to buy new hardware, a legendary university internet line to replace my terrible consumer ADSL that chokes and dies on UDP... and yeah, parties and girls and booze and all that too, I guess. Not that I don't party enough here, LAN parties count don't they?
I'm rambling, so I should probably stop talking.
Yesterday I walked on in to my local AppleCentre and ordered me an eMac.(1GHz Combo, 256MB)
...DAMN this week-long wait!
