Hey!
In HOME > FORUM > DISCUSSION > REMEMBER OUTDOORS > 1984 VIDEO,
someone was cool enough to post a link that hooks ya up to a site that shows Apple's OFFICIAL unveiling of the Macintosh
in January 1984.
So I go to the site, click on "Download Video" & what happens ?
I get a message saying that the video won't play 'cause the format it's in isn't recognized....
I can't tell you how time after time after time after time I've wanted to look at video or listen to something
& the same crap happens.
Would one of the especially tech-minded Fritterians here
be so kind as to download this video -- http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/05/01/24/1945223.shtml?tid=174 --
and translate it into something that'd be able to play on the "Windows98" version of "Windows Media Player", please?
My InterNet stuff is done SOLELY at this one particular InterNet cafe, and that's all the have here is "Windows98".

.mov is QuickTime. See if they will let you install it or if they will install it for you. It's a standard piece of software with no vulnerabilities that I know of, so they shouldn't be too concerned with it.
Hey!
Well, I downloaded "QuickTime" went to the website & all I saw was a bunch of nonsense about "mirror sites" and other such garbage....
Why in God's name do they make this @%#! so bloody COMPLICATED!?!
Why can't they just upload the damn thing, you click on "PLAY" and let that be it?
Is this a technological impossibility?
These are just "1"s & "0"s we're talkin' about here...
They do our bidding -- we can make 'em sing & dance
if we wanted to......

This from a Windows user?
There are mirrors because one site cannot handle all the traffic. They needed 10 or so to hold the load, so why not have 20 and then there is only half load on each site.
Hey!
sourapple, you have a point -- I didn't know that that's what "Mirror Sites" were.
Couldn't they've given it a more *intuitive* name -- like "More Sources For This Video"
Take anyone off the street & they wouldn't know what the hell a "Mirror Site" was....
But that doesn't explain why on OTHER sites I run into all SORTS of problems with looking at video while at *others* all I do is press "PLAY" and the video/audio plays.
And thanks for the cool link, by the way!

anything less than a 350MHz G3 or 400MHz Penteron with a decent video accelerator won't be able to watch that movie in a reasonable way; I downloaded it on my P233MMX(so I could burn & keep it) and tried to play it and the video ran like a slide show, and the sound was fuzzy and kept cutting out. Runs fine on my iMac and Armada. Bad, bad encoding job.
it was encoded with quicktime pro. not my problem. on averge people have over that, im cruzing along fine on a 400mhz celeron, 933mhz pentium III also.
The video is encoded with sorenson video 3 and the audio with QDesign music 2.
It will play fine on any G3 233 or above - easy.

It gives a short history of the making of the 1984 Macintosh commercial and a short behind the scenes
i was talking about the ones on my site, but whatever...
