After my SE stops working, now my powermac G3 is not working either, and right when I needed it to work to keep a promise! I was using OSX like normal, and wanted to play Maelstrom, an asteroids-like game, and so I switched the boot disk to OS 9.1. I booted up and started to play maelstrom when suddenly it froze. I thought it was no big deal, so I hit the reset button. I came back after a while to expect it to be started up when all it shows is a system folder icon and a question mark in the center of the screen. Did my hard disk crash? How can I tell it to boot up in OSX without booting up, because obviously it can't boot up. Do I need a stupid install CD? I'll have to borrow one BAH! This is very infuriating. I tried taking out unneccessary ram and all that, didn't work. I tried replugging in the scsi HD, that didn't work. I tried zapping the PRAM, that didn't work.

Hold down Option while booting. When the boot menu appears, select the volume with OS X on it, then hold down the X key. While holding down X, click the button with the right-pointing arrow, and keep holding X down. It should boot into X.
There is a port of Maelstrom for OS X also, so you don't need to boot into 9.1 to play it.
doesn't this method only apply to a partitioned hard disk? I have os9 and osx on the same partition
it helps the computer find the right boot folder.

I borrowed an OS 9.2 and OS 10.04 cd today to try and boot from them, because holding option wasn't doing anything. My computer couldn't mount the hard disk. I tried running the drive repair utiility and it said it couldn't be repaired. It said:
Problem: Keys out of order 46135
Is my hard drive fried or what? What can I do to recover most of it ?
I tried taking a SCSI disk from another computer (A PC) and Disk Utility won't even recognize it so it can format it. I put it in the same place in the scsi chain as the original disk. I have yet to try a IDE disk, but I guess I should. What am I doing wrong with this scsi disk? It's the same size as my previous disk, so it would be ideal and I wouldn't have to buy anything. And anyone know what program can fix that "Keys out of Order" problem. The apple website says that my Btree is damaged.

Didn't work, I just got the missing system folder icon again. I did get that other scsi disk to work and installed mac os x 10.04 (which sucks, but that's all I had). I then tried hooking up the damaged disk to see if I could run a disk utility on it from os x, but when starting up it just freezes while "checking disks".
I really want my old files back. There was a lot of hard work in there.
Did you read my previous post about the Btree being damaged and the keys out of order? How can I fix that?

Disk First Aid reports "Keys Out of Order".
Meaning
B-tree records or referenced records have become damaged.
Most of the time Disk First Aid & Norton's can't fix these problems. You need DiskWarrior to fix.
An alternate way to boot from a drive other than the selected drive is to depress the Apple+Option+Shift+Delete at startup.

I highly recommend disk warrior. It has always done an excellent job of fixing disk problems on my machines when techtool pro and norton just botched the job.
