Well, my dad recently acquired a Adaptec 3960D Ultra160 PCI Controller card. It also came with a SCSI drive for it.
The problem is that I can't get it to load or even recognize the drive. When there are no drives connected to the card, it shows up as two SCSI busses in System Profiles. But, when I connect up the hard drive, it only shows as one SCSI bus and no hard drive. I even looked in the system log and there were some interesting mentions of Adaptec in it:

Is there anyone out there that can help me? I don't remember SCSI being this hard.
Does the Hard drive work in another machine? It could be that the Drive controller went out and is shorting out or disabling the bus it is connected to.
I don't have another machine that can run this type of SCSI hard drive. I can hopefully assume the card is not the case; since, it was sold as 'working'.
There are plenty of jumpers and such on the drive and thus plenty of settings. Perhaps I don't have them set correctly.
The drive just might be toast. What kind of drive is it (detailed model number might be helpful) and what size? And if possible, what is the build date on the drive? Most high end scsi drives like those had 5 year warranties.
Also are you using an active terminator at the end of the chain?
The hard drive is a Seagate ST318203LW. Its about 17.5GB. After changing SCSI ids and switching to the other connector on the card, I'm starting to wonder if this hard drive is actually dead. I'm pretty sure it came with a warranty that runs out in January 2005. The drive does make a 'clunk' sound every now and then.
Yes, there is an active terminator at the end of the scsi cable.
My friend, me believes that the Hard Drive IS deceased. Heck, it's probably has either a platter crash, or the head died. (my ibook hard drive, when the platter stopped spinning, the board on the Hard drve wasn't even recognized. ) my guess either the platter is toast, or the head is.
If the drive is no longer being recognized by the adapatec scsi card and itmakes an odd clunking sound, then i concur that the drive is most likely dead.
Just call seagate, explain taht its not even being recognized by the scsi card and get an RMA and ship the dead drive back. Heck why not?, its sill under warranty.
Well, I got an RMA on it and I am shipping it back to them on Monday to hopefully get a good replacement in turn.

I don't know if it would happen with scsi drives, but I remember in the old days (liek 3 or 4 or more years ago), when I would send in a drive to be rmaed, i would quite often get one bigger than i sent in.
however i think with scsi, they purposely keep them the same size (for compatiblity with raid controllers and arrays).
"Back in the day" I bought a used 540mb Quantum ProDrive or something. This was back when 2GB was almost unheard of. It died on me after a few weeks, so I called up the fine folks in Milpitas (Quantums old headquarters) and got it RMA'd. Luckily it had *1* week left of the warranty. Did the "we mail you a box, you mail it back and we test it" deal, and got a box shipped back in a week ro so with a spiffy 840mb Maverick. That was a bottom end, but still in stock, probably a $150+ or so drive at the time. I think I paid $25 or so for the original ProDrive. :macos: My Amiga 2000 was never more fun before 3/4GB of storage.
for a time period, i managed to upgrade a few drives (like 2 gig maxtors) to around 6 or more gig in size via various rma cycles.
It was common for maxtor to send back a 6.4 gig drive instead of the 2 or 3 gig that you sent in for repair.
I wasn't complaining.
