how would i be able to do this? i know about slimserver and stuff, but i dont want to have to pay to do it. i was thinking maby doing it over VPN but i am not sure. i want to be able to let my friends listen to the stuff on my HD. any help is appreciated.

I think VPN is your only route. After version 4.0, Apple limited iTunes sharing to the local subnet only. On the Mac, there's RendezvousBeacon, but that's about it.
