i use i-tunes for my ipod syncing, but it has reorganised my entire music library into artist name>album folders
like these 2 examplesfrom a cd i own
Z:\My Music\Apollo 440\Gone in 60 Seconds\stop the rock
Z:\My Music\DMX\Gone in 60 Seconds\party up in here
apart from doing it manualy (over 15gb of mp3's is gonna take an age to re-sort) how can i get it back to
z:\My Music\Gone in 60 Seconds\ *"insert song names here*"
Select those songs that are in 'various artist' albums ( albums with more than one artist ), and click 'Get Info". Under "Part of a Compilation", switch it to "yes". now your music will be under:
z:\My Music\Compilations\Gone in 60 Seconds\ *"insert song names here*
thanks for the help, but unfortunately you have mis-understood my post,
what i want is all the songs from "gone in 60 seconds OST" in one folder, and all the songs from "kill bill OST" album in another folder, and so on for each of my albums,
at the minute it is organised as all songs by "appollo 440" in one folder, all songs by "5,6,7,8's" in another folder etc....
Panther G4 Kid understood your post perfectly.
If you set each album to be part of a Compilation, then instead of putting the tracks in folders by artist name (what you don't want), it'll throw them in a folder by album name (what you *do* want).
What I would do would be to sort your itunes by Album (that way all of your Kill Bill OST will be in a nice row) and then highlight all the songs for that album and then follow panther G4 Kid's instructions. You can tick the compliation box for a groups of songs (it will just save you some time instead of having to do each individiaul song).
i have now tried to do them both, and it is sorting any newly added albums by album name,
but all of my albums from before i ticked the box, are still in folders by artist.....
I think you are missing a step. Lets use the Kill Bill OST for an example.
Step one, sort the albums by name (click the album header). I think you did that fine.
Step two, scroll down and find the Kill Bill OST album.
STep three, click on the first song in the album (at the top of the list).
Step four, while holding down the shift key, click on the last song for the Kill Bill OST.
That should highlight ALL the songs for ONLY the kill bill OST.
Step five, right (control) click on one of those highlighted songs and then left click on Get Song Properties.
That should bring up the song properties window for ALL the songs in that album.
Step six, look for the tick box/drop down box that says "Part of a Compliation"
Step seven, click that drop down box and change the NO to a YES which also should automaticllly tick the tick box as well.
Step eight, click okay.
Now when you open up your MP3 folder, you should all of your artists PLUS a folder called compliations.
Open that compliation folder and you will now see a folder in there called whatever the album title is (ex: Kill Bill OST).
In that Kill Bill OST folder will be all the various artists songs for the album.
So using the compliation tick box will let you organize your folders in away that it will keep the various artists for a single album in a single folder (albiet in a subfolder: compliations).
I hope that makes more sense... It actually took me some getting used to as well..
ahh ok, its better but still not quite how i would like it, thanks for the help (all of you), but i guess i'll just have to spend a few hours sorting them out by hand...
Well what I would do is to follow my instructions and once you are done, open the compliation folder and move all those folders (with itunes closed!) to whereever yoiu want them to go.
Once that is done, if yoiu are on windows: open your my documents folder\my music\ and kill the itunes folder (this will wipe out all your settings) and then relaunch itunes and let it find and catalog all your music however uncheck the option to allow itunes to organize yoiur music.
