Hacking the floppy drivers on a Rev A iMac for OS above 8.5

I have a copy of ResEdit and have been trying to do this for abouit a year with no luck. I want to re-enable the internal floppy drive for my Rev A iMac. I added the connector a few years back and like the novelty of having it. It works like a champ when the system is booted in 8.5 or lower, but does not exist under 8.6 and up. I want to keep the OS on this machine at 9.2.2 (vice OS X), I would like to get the floppy working again. Any ideas?
