I documents on a Mac 5500 running OS 7.6.1 that I want to convert to PDF files via Acrobat distiller. I tried to set up the Adobe vprint driver to create the PS files for distiller though I cannot get chooser to see the print driver. Since I donot have a printer, is there another way to generate a PS file?
What format are your source files?
You could try a couple things...depending on the above...
When you select Print, there should be an option to set the Destination to file, rather than printer. If you've chosen Apple's Laserwriter 8 as your printer driver, this will save a postscript file.
Next bit is easy...if you've got access to an OS X box. Just open the .ps file with Preview, and save it as a PDF.
If you don't have access to OS X, then converting to PDF may depend on the version of Acrobat you're running. I've only got access to 7 at the moment, so YMMV with older versions.
Or...if you can get the documents into Quark, it has the option to save pages as EPS files, which can then be distilled in Acrobat.
Or you could try a one-step process with some such app. as that in the subject-line:

My files are in WordPerfect format, with a few Word documents.
I have a print driver installed for an Apple laser printer, though chooser will not let me use it without a printer attached.
I tried to install an Adobe driver called vprint to create the PS files, though chooser will not see it. This could be a software conflict.
The LaserWriter driver won't let you set up a printer if it doesn't see a printer on the network. But you can use Desktop Printer Utility to set up a ps print-to-file printer. I'm not sure what OS that was introduced with; you may need to download & install a newer LaserWriter software install to get it.
It's really humbling to recognize that I had to think hard about how to make this happen; before OS X I'd be able to do it in my sleep.
