preparing to look for new laptop

well, again i'm getting ready to look for a laptop since my ibook is driving me mad and my wallstreet is broken to the point that it's not good for regular use. i'm stuck between pismo and 1ghz tibook. which is better in your opinion? i just need something powerful enough to handle internet, aim, and itunes at once without freezing and it probably needs to be able to handle a bit more in some cases. i also want a laptop with batteries that take FOREVER to fail instead of a year and a half like my ibook's pos battery. so give me reccomendations based on youre experience because i can't choose between these two great machines.

Buy an AiBook

For the extra cost, it's worth it. The newest pismos are close to six years old, and tibooks are great, unless you intend on actually using them as portable computers. The aluminum PowerBooks seem to be pretty solid, and take an impact much better than the titaniums. I have a 15" that's been rock solid in the year I've had it. Of course I baby it, and bought a brenthaven case to carry it in (the case has taken a beating, and the PowerBook survived without so much as a scratch or dent. 1ghz aluminum PowerBooks are within the price range of the 1ghz titaniums, and you get airport extreme capability (easier to get the card if it's not already included), bluetooth (pretty handy if you have t-mobile or cingular, if you have verizon, I'm sorry), and a newer form factor that will be easier to get parts and accessories for in the future.

As great as the pismos are, they are overpriced for what you get. Five years ago, being able to swap out your optical drive was useful when zip drives were viable, but nowadays, a built in combo or superdrive is all you really need. But, if given a choice between an upgraded pismo (g4 550, 16mb ati rage128 mobility, 100 mhz bus) or a 1ghz titanium (g4 1ghz, 32 mb ati rage9000 mobility, 133 mhz bus) I'd choose the titanium. The pismo won't be viable to upgrade. Titaniums are beautiful, but like falling water, not the most practical.

Falling Water

While Falling Water is a beautiful building, it's construction, well, hasn't held up as well as could have been hoped. It's a shame, really.

I'd go with an AlBook too. I've used AlBooks for the past 2 years (first a 15" model I used at an old job, and now a 12" that I bought last fall) and they're solid, well-built machines. I particularly like the 12" model because of the features it offers for the size, but if you want a bigger screen, the 15" is a great machine too.

god erm...i'd say my budget i

god erm...i'd say my budget is limited. i DESPISE my ibook and just hope to get enough money off it to buy a computer that works. maybe $500? preferably less. i've used my friend's pismo before and loved it though my wallstreet boots and wakes from sleep faster <_<. never used a tibook, and i'm worried about the hinges snapping, but i have instructions on a simple fix for breaks at the screen that i'll just do to keep it from snapping to start if i were to get a tibook. i could possibly be getting a 15" albook off a friend, but it's been dropped so a corner is bent beyond the plastic trim, the drive slot is deformed, and the screen is bowing from teh wide hinge. i'm just worried about how easily the albook bends. i'm not sure processor speed matters for me as long as i can get lots of ram and a very large, very fast hard drive if that's any help. i really don't like any of apple's newer computers (except for the macbook which is a total ripoff right now), and i'm so attached to the older machines.

Yep, that describes the TiBooks too. Smile

westieg3, a 1GHz TiBook is likely a bit out of your price range unless you come across a real bargain, they're still selling for $700 on up. You could however afford a 400-667 pre-DVI TiBook, maybe even an early DVI TiBook if it's a bit tatty. For robustness though I'd have to suggest a Pismo or an early G4 iBook.

Still, if you've got a line on an under-$500 1GHz TiBook, go for it!!

Yea i would go for a g4 ibook

Yea i would go for a g4 ibook or albook(just avoid the Rev A 12''), or a pismo if you find one cheap. Actually, my 700 mhz g3 ibook has worked perfectly for what you're talking about.

well....my ibook is a 933 14"

well....my ibook is a 933 14" g4 model. so i've already tried the g4 ibook...and i DESPISE the machine. if there were some way to compare efficiency, i think that my powerbook would win. the 12" albook is a definite consideration, but i'm a bit worried bout the price in some places. i'll look around on ebay and see what i find. i considered the pismo since i knew it would be easy to add a faster hard drive and more ram. that alone would get alot up to the speed i need. and i need a rather large hard drive with all my music and movies...
