I am trying to figure out how to create a cd. I have an 8.5 retail cd but my blue and white will not boot it. To get the system working i ended up putting hdd from b+w into an imac installing 8.5 then installing the 8.6 update, but i want to find a way to make an 8.6 cd from my 8.5 cd. any ideas?

Have you got a copy of Toast 3.5.x or 4.x? With those you can create an 8.5 read/write disk image which when mounted can be updated to 8.6, then unmount and the _image_ written back as a bootable CD.
The later Toast versions (5 and up) seem to have lost that straight-forward ability.
_Might_ be able to do it with Disk Copy 6.5.x, do a "create image from device...", save as a read/write image, mount, update, unmount, burn image. Maybe.
All of the above assume one works in a classic MOS, I've had zero luck under _Classic_ or X.

ok im somewhat following what you are saying what i dont understand though is how to do the 8.6 update when the 8.5 is an actual install file not just a system folder. or maybe im just looking at this more complicated then it should be.
. . . I guess I misunderstood. You can't create an 8.6 installer from an 8.5 installer, just can't be done (not by the OP anyway, much too complicated for an initiate.) What you can create is a disk that will boot into 8.6, let you install 8.5 and then let you run the 8.6 updater on that install.
Believe it or not, that's the exact route Apple took for a number of its 8.6 install CDs. Kludgy but it works. In fact, I'm thinking that an actual full-up straight 8.6 installer may not even exist. Someone will be sure to correct me if I'm wrong.

I have here an orange CD from an iMac set I got at a rummage sale. The orange envelope the set comes in says copyright 1999. The installer on it says Install Mac OS 8.6. Looking at MacTracker, it has the last trayload fruityflavor iMacs and the first slotloaders shipping with 8.6. I was able to install on a Lombard with it. So you should be able to find something that will install 8.6.

I think you're right. That's the way it was set up on the Apple CDs that the techs used. I used to have a copy but my coffee-deprived brain can't come up with the correct name.
