I have the IIe with the usual disk controller card, and was running a 5.25 floppy model A9M0107. Worked fine. Then I added a second drive, same model, using that as Drive 1 and the existing drive as Drive 2 attached to Drive 1, daisy chain. The (new) Drive 1 works fine, but Drive 2 (the drive that worked fine as sole Drive 1) appears to be dead. Is there anyhing else I have to do with the daisy chain? Or is there a way to get the IIe to look at Drive? I tried Catalog ,D2, but get an I/O error.
I know both drives are good as indicated above (unless the daisy chain connector is bad). Any help appreciated.
Edit: I switched drives around, same thing, only the opposite drives work, don't work.
Is there some limitation of an (unenhanced, for now) IIe that I am not aware of? Or of the controller card?
Yes, you need the Apple I/O Controller card (820-5003-A aka 655-0101) which has a DB19 connector on it to control two daisy-chained drives. There are also cables that can attach to the standard DISK II controller card that picks up the second drive enable pin.

Yes, your card has two disk connection ports. They are identical except for the drive enable signal. You can make a cable to convert the header (+one connection to drive 2) to a db-19 if you want to.

Another option is to open up the drive, remove the cable and replace it with one with an IDC 20 connector on both ends.
Lucky this stuff is still mostly pretty cheap compared to when it was new.
