Apple IIGS 5.25 Boot Issue--Newbie

Hi--this is my first post and I'm a new IIGS owner.  It's not been easy so far, there's been an LCD (that does RGB) that didn't work, an incomplete mass storage device, a frustratingly non-functional CRT monitor (I'm temporarily still using composite on TV)...etc.   However, I've got one issue that I can't seem to find a solution for.  I was able to get GS/OS disks from a nice guy on a Facebook group, and if I just have the 3.25 drive hooked up it works fine.  IF I have the 5.25 hooked up (daisy-chained), the system starts to boot GS/OS from the 3.5 and displays the welcome screen but halfway through starts trying to read 5.25 disk and doesn't stop.  The computer locks up.  I should add that the 5.25 drive reads disks no problem on its own, but seems to like to get "stuck" when operating in conjunction with the 3.5.  Any help on this is much appreciated...do you think it just needs to be cleaned?  It seems to be acting like there's something there when there isn't.  I really want to have both options of mass storage and physical media.  Because I'm weird like that.
