Hello everyone,
yesterday I received my Apple IIe. Unfortunately the monitor got broken and shows a large hole in the side. I'm trying to clarify this with the eBay dealer. Nevertheless the Apple IIe is in a normal condition. This machine is from 1984 as I could see when I opened the case. The marker writings on the case will be easily removeable with isopropyl alcohol.

If this is all the padding (for the monitor) that is insufficient! Seller's issue. To safely ship a monitor you need 3-4" of that white styrofoam at all corners.
If the box has been punctured, depending how thin or thick it is, this could be a shipping company problem.
just two further notices:
you should open a claim for shipment damage and inspection with the company who delivered the monitor
- just to have complete documentation -
otherwise you may take risk of being accused from seller not to have taken required steps...
the "7" marking at the computer would quite sure indicate, that it´s from a lot of IIe´s granted to a school
from Apple´s "School beneficiary program"...

you´re correct .... it´s the european PAL version ( due to the location of the AUX MEM slot )
- and it has German keyboard layout....

You are right. It's too bad, that the monitor got damaged. Now I'm negotiating with the seller whether to take the whole system back or to give me a discount on that, so he can save the shipment costs for returning. My proposal is about 40% (I paid 200 EUR for the system) as stand-alone monitors for the Apple IIe are hard to get. They are always sold together with the IIe.

Now I'm a happy owner of an Apple IIe w/o monitor. Can anybody help me with this?
eBay Germany has no current auctions with Apple IIe monitors. Or are there any other models compatible with this machine?

for the moment at startup any old 14" monitor with FBAS input will do....
in Europe mostly often old monitors are not offered as Apple parts but rather often more
as parts with the Commodore C64 ( please pass over the basket ... my supper is rising upwards... .... )
so if you search there in ebay you will likely fast get a working monitor....
and then you have plenty time waiting for an offer with the correct Apple monitor later....

I have found those "magic eraser" cleaning products to be pretty effective at removing permanent marker from IIe cases.

Right now I'm totally confused. I received my Apple monitor today and immediately plugged everything together, but no picture. Just a beep. The monitor is not even getting illuminated or something. Only the switch light becomes green.
How to start a serious troubleshooting?
And in addition: What is the meaning of the black switch on the tilted lower front (under the keyboard)?
Probably it is switching between two different character sets (most likely German/English in that case).
Also you may be able to use a TV set as monitor.
May sound silly but the first thing to check is that the contrast and brightness are not turned all the way down. If the power light is on and the computer has booted, make sure the screen is not just too dark! If in fact you have checked those two things, the next is trying another RCA cable to eliminate the possibility of it being your video cable.
You can also do as suggested and hook the machine up to a TV to eliminate a faulty video signal from the cpu.

built a RCA-to-TV cable but after several minutes of scanning all channels, no picture appeared. Tried it with both A2e.
Can't believe, that both Apples are broken. It seems like I have to buy a Commodore 1084S as suggested by speedyG.

if you want to followup the proposal from Zan8675,
it´s recommended to make a cable with chinch plug at Appleside with centerwire soldered to the
internal pin of the chinchplug and the outer shielding of the cable soldered to the outer shield of the plug
and at the other side depending to the kind of connections that your tv-set offers:
If there is a chich-connector availiable that is labeled: Video IN then you also there may use a Chinch plug -
if there is only a S-VIDEO connector you might have to use that s-video plug and solder shielding of cable to GND and
center of cable to s-video pin.
Remark: FBAS is the videopin !
IN BOTH CASES IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO SEARCH TV-CHANNEL BY SCANNING UHF_BAND BUT INSTEAD SEARCHING FOR
SETUP IN TV for S-video connector in the allocation setup of the TV....
in very many cases the modern TV-sets offer setup for alternating inputs of AUX / SCART-channels
and there choosing between input of scart1 , scart2 or s-video as input.
You must asure that s-video connector is selected for one of the so called "AUX-channels" and then when
computer is powered up - you must select the correct AUX-channel with the tv-controller...
be aware if the apple is not powered up it might return with a message "no source at this input".....

Update: Connected the Apple to my LCD TV and it works!
Update 2: Opened the Apple Monitor and started to troubleshoot as described in the manual (S.19ff). Looks like two Diodes (D604, D602) are broken, as there is no expected 22.5V present. Anyone experienced in repairing CRTs?
