I have tracked down a replacement superdrive for my Imac late 2006.
The Imac currently has the Matshita UJ-85J slot dvd drive installed.
I came across another UJ-85J Superdrive (without manufactured for Apple specification label) see picture (1) & bought it, but realized it is slightly different to the Apple Version (with manufactured for Apple specification label) see picture (2)
Yes the only difference being is one says its manufactured for Apple Specs & the other doesn't mention Apple at all.
Will it work as it is a superdrive UJ-85J in my Imac??
Thanks for reading.
Yes.
Can anyone elaborate a little more other than a simple 'YES'
I am pleased it will work, however it looks like the superdrive UJ-85J in the 1st picture is a 'draw type' - would I have to pull out & disconnect the draw to make it a 'slot' loading drive?
If it's truly a UJ-85J, it's not a tray-loading drive. If it's a tray-loading drive, it's not a UJ-85J.
There might be some sort of bezel attached to the mouth of the drive to fit a particular machine. These can be removed very easily with a small Phillips screwdriver and/or straightened paper clip.
We spent quite a bit of time on the other thread, discussing which slot-loading drives will work in an Intel iMac: the answer is "virtually any slot-loading drive." And I say virtually only to hedge against the *possibility* that there *might* be one or two models out there that don't work: In four years of Intel Macs, I've not yet found one that won't work in a Mac.
The important distinction here is that it must be an IDE, slot-loading drive. SATA and tray-loading drives will not work, but I can practically guarantee that any IDE, slot-loading drive will be recognized by your Mac, will read discs, will boot to disc, will burn in Apple and third-party programs without any hardware or software hacks.
I hope this is enough information to put this to rest.
The drive is listed & has labeled on it as a UJ-85J superdrive.
It just doesn't have the 'Manufactured for Apple Specifications' at the top of the drive label sticker & also has a black piece of trim attached to the mouth.
Its obvious its not come from an Apple computer.
I will wait to receive the item & go from there.
Either way enough info has been provided to put this thread to rest.
Amen!
