Hey Folks,
I now have 1 Mac Plus in front of me, and am trying to find the other 2, meaning I have 3 Mac Plus's (or would that be Plusi?)
Anyway, they seem to have died because of a dead PSU.
Are there any uses for them now?
I really would like to get at least ONE working.
I have a couple of iDeas:
1. Plus Web Server (use a SCSI->Ethernet onto Broadband connection)
2. Mac Fridge (mount a small fridge in the case)
What do you recommend?

Well, both those ideas are cool, but i would personally prefer to see at least one up and running as a web server. The idea of a mac fridge is neat, and very origional, it seems like a crappy way for a mac to die, i feel that an old mac deserves to be more than a place to hide your beer. These are just my opinions hewever, you should do whatever feels right to you. There is one condition, however, to hackign an old mac; you have to keep us up to speed on your progress.
The plusii have a defect, not enough PSU cooling. You know those Kensington thingos that fixed this? Used to cost $100 a pop, haha! Sorry, I can't help you with this one tho.
If you want to get it working, I can mail you a power supply for the cost of the postage.

The first one I got (last night) actually WORKS!!! I can boot it from a System 6 floppy I have.
I need some way of getting System 7 (7.5.5, if possible) onto the Plus. I am also going to try and find the hard drive this afternoon.
The idea of the Mac Fridge was by a mate of mine, but I figured since I had the stuff it might be fun to do ... although I quite like the idea of a MacQuarium, though ... or something cool like that ...
if I can find a SCSI -> Ethernet switch then I will use my Plus through a broadband conection to run the server.
Also, I would like to get the PSU from you, Wayne. How much would shipping to the UK be?

I didn't realize you were in the UK so there could be a voltage problem. The PSU I have is a 110 volt one.

A voltage converter is an option but unfortunately the cost of that is likely more than the correct PSU

oh well ... anyway, the first Plus is working ... works fine for a while when I boot it off a System 6 disk, but not with my Rodime "20 Plus" 20MB External SCSI hard drive ... it works and everythign, but the top of the Plus starts smellign aftr a while ... so I turned it off and haven't touched it since :macos:
I will either try it again when somebody suggests something or when I have a new CO2 fire extinguisher and am in reach of the big power switch!!

you don't need a voltaje converter, just cut jp1 on the analogue board, that changes it from 110v to 240v
I looked over the analog board and can't seem to find a jp1. Where abouts is it?

it's really hardto find, i found it once on my classics logic board between two huge capacitors, i thought it was the same on all compact macs, mabye not?
Early compacts to the Plus have very similar PSU boards, and you switch voltages using the jumper - it's labelled on the 'backing card' on them.
SEs and SE/30s - sensibly - have auto-switching PSUs.
Classics and Classic IIs - built down to a price, went back to having different PSUs for different voltages.
As for 7.5.x on a Plus? Forget it. For Macs with 68000 CPUs, stick to System 6. System 7 will run far tooooooo sloooooow.

I have to agree with Stuart. I have a Classic in which B1-7.5.3 uses 2055kB of the total 4096. It runs, and brings some of the System 7 advantages over 6.0.8 with it, but the residual 2MB of RAM has to be managed if more than one application is active. It isn't conspicuously slow, but it shows that it is a '000 cpu. In many ways (except for the lack of a fan), the augmented 512Ke (2MB RAM, 20MB serial disk) running 6.0.8 is more comfortable within itself.
Go to Classic II, however, and the '030 and 10MB of RAM with System 7.5 (no 'x') is a very different story. One such was the family workhorse for essays and database (FileMaker: 20,000 records) work for the better part of 4 years up to 2000.

Put a second-hand TV in where the CRT used to be. It's a nasty job, with giant risk of electrocution, but you can play Nintendo on it!
i have 7.1 on most of my compacts. (11 or so Classic II's,1 Classic, 1 SE) some of them have 7. pretty sure the classic has 7, and the SE has 6. It's a shame that OS 7 wasn't built like win 2k. (only for this reason) i can install 2k on anything. ans it'll run
I think that in order to do the "Mac Fridge" concept you'd have to hand-build or modify a fridge in order to fit it inside the case. I mean, the Plus is pretty tiny inside....
