floppy drive on beige G3, can't understand what's happening

Greetings!
many thanks to all of you mac scientists! Wish I could know about G3 as much as you...Well, the problem is that I try to install old version of Cubase software to my mini-tower, but when unit asks me to insert floppy diskette with authorization key floppy drive doesn't see diskette and eject it automaticly after few seconds. I know that disk is not damaged, so it could not be the reason. In system profiler I can't see floppy drive mounted though it eject without pressing eject button by me, so it seems to me floppy drive works fine...may be not (( I'm so sad! Recently I replaced battery and this caused erasing some drivers...Do I need to reinstall OS? Actually I haven't original cd with OS 9. I bought some days ago OS 8 but couldn't install it because of OS 9 still on hard-drive ... So weird stuff! Hope you have any ideas.

Not sure I can help you much

Not sure I can help you much on the floppy drive issue, but I can offer some insight on the Mac OS installation. Mac OS won't allow you to install an older version of the OS overtop a newer one. This is still the case even now. What you have to do is either erase your System folder off the hard drive before you install, or erase the drive entirely. The last option which may, or may not work is to re-name the system folder something else. I don't know for sure If that works or not. But ya, if you boot up off the OS 8 CD and erase the OS 9 System folder you should be good to install.

Most of the trouble with flop

Most of the trouble with floppy drives seems to be dirty drive heads. If you don't have a head cleaner, a Quetip dipped in alcohol will do in a pinch

ok, I deleated system folder

ok, I deleated system folder and initialize hard disk, then tried to start up from CD with OS 8. Message appeared on monitor informing that current startup disk would not work on my Macintosh model and latest installer should be used to update this disk for this model... Totally insane!

most beige machines required

most beige machines required 8.1 or 8.6 IIRC. a simple os8 cd might not do it.

edit: do you have any older macs that you can install OS8 onto, update to 8.1, and then copy the system folder over to the G3? just a thought...
